Small and vulnerable
A coalition of conservation groups has identified 595 sites around the world where species are at imminent risk of extinction. Each site is the only place where a particular endangered species lives.
The pygmy hog Sus salvanius is Critically Endangered and found only in Assam, India.

Flying low
The Rodrigues flying fox Pteropus rodricensis is now found only on the Indian Ocean island of Rodrigues, where numbers have been as low as 70 individuals. The population on nearby Mauritius has already gone extinct.
Its main threat is deforestation which removes its habitat.

Andean fault
Two locations on the Andean slopes of Colombia are the only places where you could now see a gorgeted wood-quail Odontophorus strophium. There are believed to be fewer than 1,000 left.
The forests where they habitually forage for food have largely disappeared through logging.

Male midwife
One of a number of amphibians which find themselves threatened by disease as well as habitat loss, the Mallorcan midwife toad Alytes muletensis is found only in northern Mallorca. Males carry fertilised eggs on their backs after mating.
Conservation programmes have brought a slight recovery.

Beak of perfection
There may be fewer than 200 Mauritius parakeets Psittacula eques on the planet; they all live in one zone of south-western Mauritius.
Habitat loss is again the biggest threat, but introduced rats and macaques compete for food. Introduced species can be a major problem, especially on islands.

Golden gone
The golden-crowned sifaka Propithecus tattersalli is a primate found only on Madagascar.
It is one of the most threatened lemurs, classifed as Critically Endangered, with a range of only about 30 square km.

Travelling plight
This may be one of the most endangered animals, with fewer than 100 believed to exist. It is the Seychelles sheath-tailed bat Coleura seychellensis; human encroachment and tourism are the main reasons for its plight.
The new report suggests that all seven of these species could be gone within a few decades.
