Wilma lashes Mexico's coast
Hurricane Wilma battered Mexico's popular Cancun resort with winds of up to 140mph (225km/h). -
Traffic signs and trees were felled and the city has been left without electricity. -
Communication links were cut as hundreds of telephone poles were torn down. -
In many areas, the streets were under several feet of water. -
Despite being boarded up, many buildings, like this bank, were gutted by the strong winds. -
Tourists were taken from their hotels to temporary shelters in advance of the hurricaneÂ’s arrival. -
Florida prepares for Wilma
Southern Florida braced itself for the arrival of Hurricane Wilma, which battered MexicoÂ’s Gulf coast and parts of the Caribbean. -
A mandatory evacuation of the vulnerable Florida Keys was issued on Sunday evening. -
Many residents have sought refuge in hurricane shelters in advance of Wilma's arrival. -
Meanwhile, surfers caught a few last waves generated by the approaching storm. -
The hurricaneÂ’s fringes lashed CubaÂ’s south coast with high winds and heavy rains. -
Some structures like this one in San Juan y Martinez, western Cuba, collapsed under the strong winds. -
After a 48-hour pummelling, Mexico has only just begun to assess the damage to the popular Gulf coast. -
