In pictures: The truth behind global poverty

The award-winning photojournalist, Nick Danziger, recently set out on a journey spanning four continents with the aim of revealing more about the lives of the world's poorest people.
Rakia and her daughter live in a tiny straw hut in Niger. Rakia is an orphan and lives in extreme poverty.
"I borrow food from neighbours. My daughter and I do not eat everyday, we did not eat yesterday and I have nothing to give her tonight." -
Julia is from Armenia. She cannot read or write and she has never been to school because of her disability – two semi-paralysed fingers on her right hand.
The school refused to accept her and her parents were afraid that she would be teased at school. -
Channa from Cambodia currently supports her mother and brother. Her mother is too ill to work.
Channa goes to school in the morning and then goes to earn money in the afternoon and evening.
She shines shoes and weighs people on her scales a rate of 100 riel (about two pence) per person.
Women and girls across the developing world are often denied equal access to basic services such as education, health, water and sanitation. -

In northern Uganda, more than one million people have been displaced by the conflict.
Each evening as the sun sets, the children are forced to leave their villages to go into the towns to seek a safe haven for the night. -
Rihorn is from Cambodia and is too ill to work to support her children. She got sick after her second child was born.
She cannot afford to pay for her healthcare. -
Ayaz's father developed a chronic cough and was admitted to a TB clinic.
Shortly after, he died of Aids.
Ayaz is no longer in school as he needs to support his family. -

The fertile soils are being polluted by the dumping of wastes and by the natural salts and mineral residues that are left after the rainy season. -
Children and adolescents can be found trudging through the slush of this refuse dump in Cambodia.
The recyclers will scoop up and eat someone elseÂ’s discarded rice, or gnaw at watermelon rinds that have been all but been picked clean.
