Separatist rebels in Aceh have handed over their first batch of weapons to international monitors. -
At a ceremony in the provincial capital, Banda Aceh, about 80 weapons were given to international monitors. -
Kalashnikov rifles, a machine gun and a rocket propelled grenade launcher were among the arms handed in. -
The monitoring teams then destroyed the weapons, watched by local people and international media. -
The weapons handover is a key part of the peace deal between the rebels - from the Free Aceh Movement (Gam) - and the Indonesian government. -
In return for Gam's disarmament, Indonesia has promised to withdraw thousands of troops from the region. Many have already left. -
The two sides began talks in the wake of the huge tsunami last December, which killed more than 120,000 people in Aceh. The province is still struggling to cope with the disaster. -
