  Mirny is a town in NE Siberian Russia, in Sakha Republic. Founded in 1956, when diamonds were discovered, Mirny grew rapidly and is now the center of the Russian diamond-mining industry. It is the location of world's largest open-pit diamond mine.

  The huge Mirny diamond mining pit at Mirny (in Yakutia, Eastern Siberia) is approximately 540 m deep, one of the deepest in the world. The permafrost here permits steeper sides than in unfrozen pits. The tiny-looking buildings along the rim are actually four to five stories high.
