On a calm sunny day, Chek Jawa is too beautiful for words.
It is deep tragedy to lose this wonderous habitat, especially for those
who are unable to experience it before it is gone forever.
It is sad when in the end, we can only provide virtual habitats for our children... -
Chek Jawa's seagrass beds are thick and rich with an amazing diveristy of marine plants and algae. These support a vast array of creatures from tiny baby fishes and prawns, to dugongs, which migrate constantly as they need large quantities of food which one location alone cannot provide. -
The coral rubble near the beacon is rich with colourful sponges and other creaturs.
As this area is rarely expoed except at very low tides, some of the more delicate and
beautiful plants and animals are found here. -
At low tide, the sand is littered with
closed-up carpet anemones, like colourful candy. -
Rocky Shore
The rocky shore is scenic at sunrise but becomes a hot desert during the day when the tide is out. Creatures that live here have to adapt to these harsh conditions. -
Periwinkles
Periwinkles are hardy little shells and thus the most common shells
found on higher ground in the rocky areas. They feed on algae and lichens. -
Banded Bead Anemone (Epiactis sp.)
These tough anemones close up tight at low tide, forming button-like bumps. -

When the tide returns, they unfurl their short tentacles
to gather food particles from the water. -
Colonial Tunicates
These strange animals belong to the same phylum as humans because
in their larval stage, they have a primitive spinal chord, which later
degenerates as they mature! They are often mistaken for sponges. -
A colourful array of creatures on the rocks
The yellow blobs are colonial tunicates, the small black blobs are bead anameones, while the orange stuff is some sort of encrusting organism. -
Volcano Barnacle (Tetraclita sp.)
Barnacles are crustacea and not molluscs. In their larval stage, they look like tiny shrimps.When a larvae finds a good spot to settle down, it releases cement from the tips of its first pair of antennaes and glues itself head down on the surface. It then secretes a thick shell made up of a series of plates. Inside the shell is a segmented body and six pairs of segmented legs modified into feathery appendages. At high tide, the animal waves its legs outside the shell to filter feed and breathe, as the legs also contain the gills. -
Nerita Shell (Family Neritidae) among Limpets
The Nerite shell (top left) is common the rocks. These herbivorous snails graze on the algae that coats the rocks. Limpets are also grazing molluscs
that are common on the rocks. -
Mussels
Mussels attach themselves to hard surfaces with byssus threads.
During low tide, they clamp up tight to prevent water loss.
When the tide returns, they open up to filter the water for titbits. -
Top shells (Family Monodontidae)
They graze on algae and are more active at night.
They can move surprisingly fast if they want to! -
Drills (Family Muricidae)
These innocent looking snails have sinister habits. They are able to drill a hole through the shells of barnacles and bivalves by secreting an acid. They then use their rough ribbon-like tongues to 'drill' through. These Drills are laying eggs on a rock. -
Mating Nerite shells (Family Neritidae)
Nerites practice internal fertilisation so the male has a penis and
the female has an organ to store sperm. The eggs are laid in small white capsules.
