Yup, Mr Ugly has been doing very well in his tank for the past 2+ weeks, he seems to be able to recognise faces... when I go very close to the tank he'll begin to swim up and down in front of the glass, like begging for food.Originally posted by BabyLover:sooo cute!
is Mr Ugly adapting well?? he has a place all for himself? how gd life.
the turtle sooo nice... he juz suck up the peas? or slowly bit them up?
oh n wats tat pet at the corner??
Yup, he's a salt-water cuttlefish... I set up a marine tank just for this creature.Originally posted by elindra:Btw Mr Ugly is a salt-water squid right?
I'm not sure if there are fresh water squids around
But he seems like an interesting pet.
Anyway I love to keep interesting fishes
Used to keep head-standers as well. They look really cute
hahaOriginally posted by cornyfish2000:You bet.
One of the rare fishes from the Amazon, easily costs as much as a 3 day 2 night holiday in Bangkok.
Ohhh!!! I never tried my hand at marine fish before though. If I do set up one I think I will go for puffer and box fishes. Think those are so cuteOriginally posted by cornyfish2000:Yup, he's a salt-water cuttlefish... I set up a marine tank just for this creature.
Fortunately he has not attempted to squirt ink into the water so far, something cuttlefishes are known to do when threatened.. that's another reason why i leave him alone in the tank.. do not want to risk introducing a tankmate for him.
Hmmm btw, what are headstanders?
Oh yes, i've tried keeping a longhorned cowfish before.. unfortunately it died after just 3 days in my tank, victim to white spots disease (ich). A pic of a cowfish (not mine!):Originally posted by elindra:Ohhh!!! I never tried my hand at marine fish before though. If I do set up one I think I will go for puffer and box fishes. Oh, headstanders are this really skinny looking fishes that swim vertically when they are resting. They can swim horizontally if they wanted but usually they are either vertical or at an angle
Well so far everyone who has visited my tanks at home have commented that I have a peculiar liking for ugly fishes and that I should keep more 'ornamental' species instead..Originally posted by bismarck:haha

Well actually if you're just planning to keep a fish-only marine tank, it ain't very much different from a freshwater tank. Just ensure that the tank has been fully cycled (~4 weeks) before adding the first fish. A reef-tank is a very different affair though, just the equipment alone (filtration system etc) is enough to burn a hole in the pocket, usually the total cost adds up to over a thousand dollars for a small one.. So naturally, a reef tank is something that i can only dream about.Originally posted by elindra:Ahhhhh the cow fish is tooo cute!!!! KAWAII!!!
Maybe I should keep a marine pond with box fishes. They look pretty from topp down too
Thing is I have no experience and I don't know if I can keep them alive
K k. Thanks for the adviseOriginally posted by cornyfish2000:Well actually if you're just planning to keep a fish-only marine tank, it ain't very much different from a freshwater tank. Anyway, if you'd like to find out more about marine fish-keeping, I can recommend 2 websites that i find very useful and informative:
1) www.wetwebmedia.com => it has extensive fish-keeping info on both marine and freshwater systems, as well as detailed description of the common species of fish and invertebrates.
2) www.sgreefclub.com => This is a local forum set up by marine fish-keeping hobbyist. Lots of friendly members there to answer queries on marine-tank related matters.
No problem! Always nice to find someone who shares an interest in exotic aquatic pets!Originally posted by elindra:K k. Thanks for the advise
ohh so interesting...Originally posted by cornyfish2000:Yup, Mr Ugly has been doing very well in his tank for the past 2+ weeks, he seems to be able to recognise faces... when I go very close to the tank he'll begin to swim up and down in front of the glass, like begging for food.
Very interesting to watch him catch his live prey... When he sees his food, you can see him keep changing colour right before your eyes... it's a mosaic-like pattern that keeps changing, hard to describe in words but something which i find very fascinating. According to a website, this colour change is supposed to dazzle and confuse it's prey, dunno how true is it. He will then shoot out 2 very long tentacles (which are supposed to have many mini suckers on them) to grab the food and bring it to his mouth. And ya, i keep him alone in the tank with nothing else but sand.
Oh as for the turtle he will first sniff the peas with his snout (he will walk/swim around and sniff at practically everything when hungry) for a few seconds, then if he decides to eat them he'll chew them up before swallowing. For big pieces of food that can't be swallowed in one mouthful, he'll take one end of the food in his mouth and push the other end away from him with his flippers, therefore breaking the piece of food into 2 smaller pieces.
The black-spotted green fish to the left of the turtle is a scat (supposed to eat up the waste products of the other fishes but somehow mine doesn't), and the fish to the right of the turtle is a baby red-tailed catfish.
yah all those unique fishes are not ez to care...Originally posted by elindra:Ahhhhh the cow fish is tooo cute!!!! KAWAII!!!

Seahorses are quite rare nowadays also, due to the restriction recently on live seahorse sales.. ya, but super hard to keep. Saw a shop stocking them recently but dun dare to buy.
A real oddity for the marine aquarium would be the sea dragon:
Below is a beautiful marine filefish that is relatively inexpensive (~8 dollars) but unfortunately feeds only on corals... hope to keep it one day but will surely be very ex to supply him with corals to eat.
I'm currently in the process of setting up my second marine tank, and yup, will post the pics when its up and running, hopefully in a month or so. My current interest is now in marine, as I find that marine fishes/invertebrates are much prettier and more interesting than freshwater ones.
Oh i'm a regular at the pasir ris fish farm (Pasir Ris Farmway 2, Block D) too! Heh, but all in all i'm not really impressed by the quality of the fishes there leh, especially the prepacked ones in bags that have been there for many days liao, most dead or dying... Many dead fishes and also many with tiny white spots scratching against the sides of the tank. Not especially cheap also.. anyway it's the place to go lar, if you wanna see wierd and unique marine creatures... I got my cuttlefish from there.Originally posted by BabyLover:tat seahorse is really rare n unique... wah sure very hard to keep...
if u wanna get.. better start with the normal ones first to try...

tats a very nice ribbon eel... ur might be right abt the moray eel...Originally posted by cornyfish2000:Oh i'm a regular at the pasir ris fish farm (Pasir Ris Farmway 2, Block D) too! As for the seahorse i can't accomodate already, no more tanks liao... I currently have 3 marine tanks and 3 freshwater ones and my mum keeps complaining that i'm turning the house into a fish shop..
Btw, how much did you get your octopus for? Does it have blue rings on its body? I think the snake eel you kept is a moray eel, judging from the fact that it ate up the other fishes... There is a beautiful variant of the moray eel, called a ribbon eel... it's blue and yellow colour but super delicate and usually starves itself to death, refusing all food.. which was what happened to my moray eel after ~6months.

How about adding clownfishes to your tank? They're one of my favourite fishes, especially the tomato clown and the Percula Clown:
