Don't move your eyes. Then look at an empty white sheet of paper, anf you'll see the red, white, and blue flag. -

Flashing Fractal

As you look around the image, different parts come into, and go out of focus rapidly. Add to this, a constant barrage of rapid-fire, after images. The result is a rage party for your light receptors. -
The Ambiguous Cube Illusion
At first it may look like a normal cube. But this cube is whimsical, and may suddenly turn into something else. You can empower the transformations by concentrating a little.
The first aspect in this figure is as a cube as we usually see the figure. Now look at the cube, and in your mind's eye, turn it inside out. Try to make the figure appear as a room with two walls and a darker floor. Once this aspect is realized, the figure takes on a brand-new 3D appearance. -

Illusory Movement
Here, the white shapes will rotate around the center in a clockwise direction. If you look directly at the white shapes, the illusion will not work. To make the shapes rotate, track the movement from the corner of your eye, using your peripheral vision. A good place to look is directly at the center of the design. Another place to look is outside the design. Check for movement using your peripheral vision while reading this paragraph. -

Plate Tectonics
This design was inspired by the massive movements of continents upon the crust of our planet. Each half of the design constantly drifts towards the subduction zone in the center.
Note that movement always occurs in the direction of the white edges of the elements. Use your peripheral vision to make the plates drift. -
Spinning Chevrons
These chevrons appear to be spinning as you read this. Some apparent movement illusions work best if you do not look directly at them. Use your peripheral vision to see these illusions.
This spinning chevron design is rotating counter-clockwise, in the direction of their leading white edges. -
Lateral Drift
In this design, movement is to the left and right, away from the center line.
To see the movement, keep your eye moving around the design as you look at the illusion.
Again, movement is always in the direction in which the white contrasting edges are facing. -
4-Squares Drifting
Stare at this design and the four quadrants will begin drifting towards the center.
If you look too hard at the design the illusion of movement will stop. Use your peripheral vision to track the apparent movement. Keep your eyes moving around the design. -

A clockwise spinning design. Keep your eyes moving around. Use your peripheral vision to see the illusory movement out of the corner of your eye. -

Camouflage in Nature
This Gray Squirrel uses both coloring and texture to blend into the background.
The squirrel sits motionless, its fur a close match for the color and grain of the tree. The soft edges of it's bushy tail lay flat and cast no shadow.
Because there are so few differences between it and the background, the squirrel may be missed by a careful observer or predator. -
Moiré Patterns
When a transparent pattern lays over a second pattern, the combined patterns are called a Moiré [more-ray].
The word Moiré was first used by weavers and comes from the word mohair, a kind of cloth made from the fine hair of an Angora goat. Artists hate moiré patterns because they can sometimes ruin a printed photo or drawing. But they can also be great fun.
Moving one pattern over another can generate fascinating visual effects. These exhibits represent a small sample of the astounding variety of moiré patterns possible. -
