Healthy r/s
Both parties are deeply in love with each other, are willing to put in effort to make the r/s works. Getting into a r/s does not guarantee that your life will be full of roses from then on. But it requires work to keep it going. Both parties should have the give and take attitude. To give endlessly when the other party doesn't reciprocate sounds like a selfless idea, but it will sap you of energy better spent on loving someone who will love you back just as fiercely and passionately.
Trust and faith in each other are very important as well. Without those, the r/s will be full with insecurities and will fail sooner or later. Think of insecurity as weed which grows within the garden, choking the beautiful, blooming flowers to death if it is allowed to continue to grow without control...
And there should be enough communication between the couple. I have seen many r/s which break down because of lack of communication. Communication is not something that happens overnight, it is a skill that has to be learned.
