Back Pain, Join Pain, Muscle Aches, stiff necks.
Few people chart their aches and pains in relation to their menstrual cycles. Orthopedists are becoming increasingly aware, however, that unexplained recurrent pain in the back and other muscles may be related to a woman's cycle. Commonly the pains begin in one area, as with stiff neck, and over the course of a week or so tend to travel to the back or legs. Traditionally, these pains have simply been ignored as "women's complaints." -
What treatment is available for PMS?
Many treatments have been tried for easing the symptoms of PMS. However, no treatment has been found that works for everyone. A combination of lifestyle changes and other treatment may be needed. If your PMS is not so bad that you need medical help, a healthier lifestyle may help you feel better and cope with symptoms.
Adopt a healthier way of life. Exercise regularly, get enough sleep, choose healthy foods, don't smoke, and find ways to manage stress in your life.
Try avoiding excess salt, sugary foods, caffeine, and alcohol, especially when you are having PMS symptoms.
Be sure that you are getting enough vitamins and minerals. Take a multivitamin every day that includes 400 micrograms of folic acid. A calcium supplement with vitamin D can help keep bones strong and may help with PMS symptoms.
In more severe cases, drugs such as diuretics, ibuprofen, birth control pills, or antidepressants may be used.
Although PMS does not seem to be related to abnormal hormone levels, some women respond to hormonal treatment. For example, one approach has been to use drugs such as birth control pills to stop ovulation from occurring. There is evidence that a brain chemical, serotonin, plays a role in severe forms of PMS. Antidepressants that alter serotonin in the body have been shown to help many women with severe PMS. -
Adominal Bloating, Joint Swelling, Edema (Generalized Water Retention)
Premenstrually, water may collect in the tissues of the abdomen as well as in the ankles and other joints and in the face. Although some women do gain weight during this time. body fluids are being redistributed. Some women experience an increase in thirst. Others have characteristic puffiness around their eyes.Typically this excess water disappears around the first day of the menstrual period. -

Fatique, Lethargy, Tiredness
Women can experience fatigue throughout the premenstrual time or more commonly, one or two days prior to the onset of menstruation. This pervasive sense of exhaustion can occur without any of the mood changes. -
Breast Swelling and Pain
The Breast symptoms that occur with PMS can be mild or quite severe. The swelling and soreness can result in extreme sensitivity to any touch, including clothing. Breats cysts tend to become enlarged at this time, and women whose Breats tissue is usually smooth may develop lumps. These symptoms usually disappear within a few days of the onset of the period. -
Eye Difficulties
Regularly recurring eye problems can include excessive dryness, tearing, difficulty focusing and aching. -
Fainting and Dizziness
Sometimes in the absence of any diagnosed medical condition, women will experience these symptoms premenstrually. -
Infections
Many infections seem to occur on a regular basis premenstrually. These include sinus infection, sore throat, herpes (cold sores andgenital herpes), skin boils, urinary tract infections and others. These infections caused by the usual organisms, but there seems to be a decrease in the body's resistance at this time and therefore an exacerbation of symptoms. -
Insomnia
Premenstrual sleeplessness can occur independent of any mood changes and in women who otherwise sleep well. Infact, the insomnia often begins before other symptoms and may contribute to mood shifts, irritability and depression. The insomnia can consist either of difficulty falling asleep at night or of awakening too early in the morning. -
Sensitivity to noise, touch, smell
Women most often report an increased sensitivity to touch and hearing, but some also react strongly to certain smells. The sensitivity to sound ranges from being more bothered by a baby's crying to finding the radio or TV much too loud. The sensitivity to touch includes specific tender areas of the body as well as generalized sensation of discomfort when the skin is touched. -
Seizures
Some women with seizures disorders find that their seizures are more common premenstrually. That is true of grand mal, petit mal and temporal-lobe seizures. -
Urinary Difficulties
Increased frequency of urination and burning on urination can occur premenstrually even in the absence of known infection. -
Weight Gain
Some women feel as though they have gained weight even though the scale does not show an increase. Others have reported as much as twelve pound weight gain and loss monthly because of fluid retention. The weight gain of PMS is complicated by edema, food cravings and binges. -
Emotional Symptoms
Anger, Anxiety, Crying, Depression, Irritability, Loss of self-esteem, Panic, Paranoia, Tension, Violence, Withdrawl. -
