eh.. cannot put too much salt... afterall they are not salt water fishes.Originally posted by bismarck:i heard of a treatment method to treat surface probs of fishes, to place them in a high salt concentration of water for a period of time
how long ? how much salt?
i dun tink so leh..Originally posted by bismarck:what happens is that i suspect fungus/parasite
there's already 1 tsp salt in the 2ft tank.
what i remember is taht the treatment involves isolation the fish and placing it in the high salt for a while only.
ohh...Originally posted by cornyfish2000:Actually there is indeed a "salt-dip" treatment, most useful for fishes infected with parasites.
It involves putting the fish (freshwater) in full-strength saltwater for a few min (usually the teaching is to put as long as possible, till the fish starts showing distress, which, depending on the fish species, is usually ~5-10min). Then transfer the fish back into clean freshwater.
My freshwater puffer once had some parasitic infection of his eye, which became all swollen and obscured.. it got better after a salt-dip. It was more convenient for me cos i got the salt-mix at home for my marine fishes.
Similarly, parasitic infection in marine fishes can be treated with "freshwater-dip".
I think the theory behind the "salt-dip" is that the freshwater fish is usually able to tolerate full strength salt-water for a much longer period of time than the freshwater parasite.Originally posted by BabyLover:ohh...
i din dare to use full strength cos was told they will die.
n did a mild trtment as mentioned abv then abt 2days it got well.
so tat means nxtime juz do ur method..dip abt 5mins?
must wait until it shows distress or no need as lg times up to take out??
juz a short dip confirm they r ok n can put bk w the other fish or still gotta isolate??
oiccc... undstd now, thanks...Originally posted by cornyfish2000:I think the theory behind the "salt-dip" is that the freshwater fish is usually able to tolerate full strength salt-water for a much longer period of time than the freshwater parasite.
As for the duration of the dip, i think it really depends on your assessment of the condition and the type of fish concerned. Like if it's a delicate species like discus fish u'd probably not wanna risk putting him into a salt dip at all. Whereas i remember putting my pufferfish in full-strength saltwater and he was still happily swimming around and exploring the container after 15min.
And, depending on the type of infection, there's no guarantee the fish's condition will improve after the dip.
Oh, and it's always wise to isolate any sick fishes u have, otherwise pretty soon the whole tank will come down with the infection..
halo ? he's a fish ok?Originally posted by BabyLover:oiccc... undstd now, thanks...
wah we hv an expert here!
goody.. nxtime can ask cornyfish for fish advice
so u telling me.. afterall fish undstd fish well har...Originally posted by bismarck:halo ? he's a fish ok?
still must buy ?Originally posted by cornyfish2000:Usually that means a specific gravity (SG) of ~1.020... u need a hygrometer (available in marine aquariums) to measure this.
Yup, u're right.. i used to keep my green-spotted puffer with a moray eel in a brackish tank, till the moray eel starved himself to death after a few months of starvation.Originally posted by elindra:That is because the fresh water puffer fish loves brackish water which means ideally, the living conditions of a fresh water puffer should have some amount of salt as well. They prefer it that way.
However, please don't use a salt water treatment for sensitive fishes because likely you will kill them by giving them additional stress.
oopsOriginally posted by mistyblue:Usually 1 teaspoon for a tank like a 20 inch TV.
Last time when I had fish, I use salt to scrub the tank...
yahOriginally posted by BabyLover:so u telling me.. afterall fish undstd fish well har...
Depends .. if they are used to it... its alright.Originally posted by bismarck:oops
i read it as 20foot tank 1 tsp
then i have been preserving my fishes using salt soln
There are 2 kinds of salt available in the market..Originally posted by progene:Me usually put 2 teaspoon(those chinese teaspoon use in chinese restaurant, nt those use for kopi or tea) of salts into e water aft I wash my tank. Btw, me used those salts bought from fish shop...
lik dat can??
Oh no... salt-dips (in high concentration saltwater) are strictly reserved for fishes with parasite infections, not normal fishes!Originally posted by progene:Depen regular dippin in salt water will improv e coindition of my fish a not? Mine is a luohan!!
Mine is cmf aquarium salt...btw, is there anyother way to make my luohan more active...he lik dun lik eat other fishes(fresh meat), feed him wif small guppies or fishes, he eat dem n spilt dem out n pollute e water....so all tis while i feed him onli dry food...still so small size despite so long liao!Originally posted by cornyfish2000:There are 2 kinds of salt available in the market..
1)aquarium salt: this u can find readily in most freshwater fish shops. And this is also what u add a bit of to your main fish tank to help keep your fishes healthy.
2)marine salt: this is usually only found in marine fish shops. u do NOT add this to your freshwater fishtank! I use marine salt for the salt-dip, not sure if aquarium salt can be used for salt-dips or not.
