Not-to-be-missed this season is Mo Fan and the Singapore Chinese Orchestra's (SCO) realisation of Cao YuÂ’s damning classic, Thunderstorm (Lei Yu). A battleforce of luminaries - including Chinese talents Gao Man Hua and Wei Song, plus SingaporeÂ’s Wong Su Sun and Nelson Kwei - will hoist this epic play into a concert opera. SCOÂ’s take on the tragedy of a feudal family wrecked asunder by corruption and changes comes riding on the vanguard of two earlier concert-operas: Marco Polo & Princess Blue (2002) and Confucius Cantata (2000).
This time, however, the subject matter climbs up the melodrama scale. Shanghai Conservatory-trained Mo pushes CaoÂ’s play to new heights from its three earlier film and ballet dramatisations. This new operetta, premiered in Shanghai in 2001, has since been acclaimed for its realism and sensitivity in translating text into highly-charged music. This Singapore version features the award-winning talents of theatre director Goh Boon Teck and lighting designer Suven Chan. It is set in the aristocratic household of a Straits Chinese family in Singapore in the 1910s.
