IDE 1 Master - C: drive (main HDD)
IDE 1 Slave
IDE 2 Master - Usually CD rom/
IDE 2 Slave
Newer HDD like SATA HDD run at the speed of 10k RPM which is faster then normal HDDs by 2500rpm

Some ppl uses IDE 1 Master for HDD and IDE 2 Slave for CD rom leaving IDE 2 empty ...
