STOMPer icebu12n was frustrated when 20 taxis with the
green available light refused to pick him up last night (Apr 8) at
around 11.25pm. The STOMPer disapproves of such 'pickiness' by taxi
drivers.
The STOMPer recounted:
"Taxis that are for hire go rogue at 30 minutes before midnight!
"My friends and I had supper at Crazy World cafe in Chinatown and left at around 11.25pm.
"We headed out to the main road to take a cab back home.
"There were many taxis with the green light on, but none of them stopped and fetch me back to my home sweet home.
"Such arrogant taxi drivers! They were from companies like Comfort, CityCab etc.
"They wouldn't stop to fetch a tired person like me home.
"I had to flag down about 20 before I could finally hop onto one at around 11.50pm.
"What is LTA doing -- closing an eye and ignoring this?
"Taxi drivers are not providing any service to Singaporeans and are being picky.
"Why
can't our taxis be like those in Hong Kong which offer 20% off the fare
after midnight, instead of double charging and being greedy for the
extra cash!
"Sad, sad case isn't it?"
boooooooooo~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Price controls and licence number controls are the very thing that cause the distortions that make the Singapore taxi experience so unbearable.
Why not institute a way for customers to rate their taxi trips and thus name and shame poor service providers?
The dominant airline in the UK (BA) once said that allowing more competition would destroy the airline market. They were wrong. Very wrong.
More competition made them have to be attentive to the needs of customers and lower their prices. As a result more people started using flights.
Now even SIA can ferry people from London to Paris! And yet Singapore refuses to apply the same proven principles to the taxi market in her own territory.
e.g. http://www.texxi.tv
Texxi is a system that would allow users to rate their taxi drivers and thus help everyone identify the best and worst service providers.
Coupled with a fully deregulated market, taxi prices would fall and revenues would increase for drivers as more people would then use taxis.
This effect has been noted before - most notably in the airline market. More competition made things better for everyone EXCEPT poor service providers who failed.
