One easiest reason is ofcourse, the FASTEST way to quickly get a job and start getting income.
All would know that interviews for professional jobs takes 3-4 rounds of interviews, processing takes another 2-3 weeks. So, let's say you send out 50 CVs, which already take you 1 full month's work, inclusive of searching and crafting coverletter, refining CV to suit job etc, then attending interviews etc.
So, let's compute, finding work = 2- 3 months (unsure, but taxi is sure)
Interviews = 1 - 2 months (some wont get back to you, so you gong gong wait, or some will reply only after 2 weeks or 1 month, Yo! check out the SPF thread and you see them wait for 3-6 months!, plus rounds of interviews)
Confirmed, but admin process = 1 month
Total = 6-8 months
But taxi, once you get the license, you go to the taxi company and it will allocate a cab for you to start work!
The is smart choice. But as people in the blog says, do not get too used to cab driving life, else, it may result in you loosing your aspirations for other professional work, or it will make you too tired to search for other professional work in your spare times (e.g. those time you not driving cab)
I was full of zest looking forward to to my new career as a taxi driver as I would be getting my TDVL anytime this week. However, the publicity / blog about this Phd taxi driver and the comments within it give me a mixed bag of feelings now. Me no Phd nor degree holder but do we think we would could get the same kind of sympathizers and understanding commuters he has. I suppose we each have our own story to tell.
LTee, this publicity is ok for everyone as it brings out that as taxidrivers, we are all the same, and can come from many different backgrounds.
It doesnt matter if we are degree holders, ITC holders, secondary school dropouts, or even ex-convicts etc. Because every brother is a brother in the taxi gang, everyone has their own story why they want to drive.
So, let's enjoy every moment of taxi driving, enjoy the scenary and food, and also the passengers while we are at it. ")

That is comforting, but just that my zest was shot down a little when reading those negative views / comments.

No. Degree holders who can't find a job can find a temp job first and job agencies have alot of such jobs.
Once they are inside the company if there are staffs who resign they can than request to convert to perm staff.
Otherwise with the temp job as experience can help them in future to get a job

Dun know but this link said...http://sgrecruiters.blogspot.com/2009/03/grads-among-worst-hit-as-jobless-rate.html
GRADUATES are hurting the most among the growing pool of jobless Singapore residents battered by the economic crisis.
The number of out-of-work degree holders more than doubled last year to 14,800 in December, from 6,200 a year earlier.

Taxi driving is a noble profession just like doctor, teacher, plumber, cleaner etc. it is doing an honest job making an honest living from it.

Agree.... We still need ppl like teachers, bus captains, cabbies, cleaners, construction workers, etc, around. Some ppl just take things for granted. They will only realize it when stg goes wrong.
fall from grace..
this guy may be driving a taxi but he is still a Phd holder, no one can take that away from him :)
but driving a taxi requires a different set of skills which Master Pool has.
