Study the street directory carefully. Go for a joy ride on a bus, on a motor bike or your friend lend you a car drive around.... ha.ha.ha..
the more you drive by the same road every day... you will know where you are.
tell you frankly, i have being RTS (roaming the street) for so many years and sometime still get lost.....
very important learn all the towns & all the expressway. which expressway exit link to which town etc. not all exit share the same name as the town example Jurong west st 90plus exit PIE Pioneer rd nth, Dover estate AYE exit bouna vista/clementi rd
not all desination can be link by expressway example Holland V to toa payoh confirm take farrer-lornie-braddell flyover.no expessway needed for this route.
best is still learn it thru the hard way,hit the road & learn at the same time.tell your pax u r new & ask him guide u,80% of them will know the way trust me,then the rest 20% ask to refer street directory,if really cannot then take other taxi case close
good luck

u rich? i not a driver but i see thouse uncle car has digital map
google earth/map.gov.sg + on the road experience = win
Learn by Nth Sth East West,NW,NE,SW,SE. woodlands, yishun in the nth, pasir ris, tampines in the east then say u r in town, pax want to go pasir ris, which expressway should u take? if from town go jurong east st 31 then which way now?
Keep giving yourself or ask your wife test u different routes & refer to street directory for answer.
If i get a GPS that probably spend me $200 ~ $300, will it totally reslove my problem and dont have to worry at all as a new relief driver.............
I always say .... GPS is just a software , the main source of software comes from our head . So die die learn by hard .
And bear this in mind , the best way to learn is to get fuck upside down by irritated customers .... u get banged a few times , that route u forever will remember .
But to learn to run , must crawl first , then walk , then run , right ? Unless u are like Uncle me , all started to learn when i was an outdoor salesman .....
It's very hard to drive , honestly if u have almost zero knowledge of Singapore .
Many had tried , many had died .....
So.... start from PIE from Tuas la ....
Write this down today ...
PIE come down from Tuas ...
First exit Upper Jurong ..... Pioneer Road North .,.... Jalan Bahar .... Corporation Road ...... Jurong Town Hall Road .... Toh Guan Road ....Bt Batok East Ave 3 ..... Clementi Ave 6 .....Up Bt Timah ..... BKE .....Eng Neo ...... Lornie Road ..... stevens road ..... Thomson Road ...... Up Serangoon Road ..... Kallang Way .... KPE ..... Paya Lebar ..... Eunos ..... Bedok Reservoir .... Bedok North ...... Bedok North Ave 3 ..... Tampines ....Simei ...... Tampines St 31 ..... TPE .... ECP ..... Changi Airport .
So do this sort of research via the same from Changi Airport to Tuas .
Do the same for AYE ...
Do the same from AYE to Airport ( reverse ) ....
Do the same for ECP ..... vice versa ...
Same to TPE .....
CTE as well ...
SLE also .....
Learn this basic , then think about many things
Ang Mo Kio Ave 1 exit , link to which part of AMK ??????
Jurong Town Hall exit will usually take you to where ????
The shortest route u'll never learn from anyone , except from your customer themself , they will tell which way is their way , u just follow .
Again unless are Poolie , i recommend the way i want to go , not they want to go . I dun even bother to ask , cos i am so sure my way is definitely the shortest .
I also get banged into learning the taxi ways .....
And it does the trick .....
And fast ...
Still i think basic must be there .
Street directory is your good friend... and in vehicle gps also...
" Walao , after 2 yrs on the road , what have u been doing ? "
Hahahahahahahah ....
must learn those ulu ulu road names
i asked one cabbie take me to jalan senyum...took him 2 phone calls to establish the location..same goes with jalan sempadan...
