Hello Taxi Shifu and Gurus,
I will take my TVDL test beginning Aug. Probably drive taxi in Sep. I'm a newbie and need advice on whether to be a hirer or relief. I don't know whether to be a hirer or relief. As sometime i need to get out of SG and travel for 4 to 5 days in a month. If i am not travelling, i am damn free all days. Is it possible to be a relief driver with off-days for a week? I don't know about most hirer desire. I can drive day or night or even OMO but i prefer night and preferably "Auto" and "Comfort". However OMO for me is a problem as i might travel. Advice please !!!
I guess it probably depend on how frequent is your travelling in a year...if hirers are comfortable with you flying off while having the chance to earn more income, then i think it's no problem.
i will be collecting the taxi VDL tomorrow from smrt, i am looking forward to be a relief driver, want to keep myself busy and earn some cash, hope ts pass his test soon, maybe we can work something out.
To TS , being a hirer , u can do anything , not driving , idling , sleep late , woke up late ... taxi company really don't care , as long as u pay the rental .
If u want to fly off out of Sg , just go ahead , just put those rental in the bank account , wait for the company to giro off it .
Simple ?
as a friend , i would say .... be a relief .
Being a relief , if want extra off day , just subsidise your hirer 50% of the normal rental , pay him half of say $46 rental .
If u taking 3 days off , if rental $50 , u pay $25x3 ..... and gets 3 days off .
The standard market practise , no written rules and regulation stated in any agreements , just a mutual agreement , an understanding between hirer and you .
It's not easy to find a Sonata hirer of your choice ... sometime must bend a bit . Inorder to fit into your demands .
Shifu Pool, your advice is wonderful. I can bend a bit for crown. No issue with shifting gears. You think any hirer will take those terms you mentioned for the rental rates? As i have gone thru your thread histories. Yes, i want lifestyle but not "no life" if OMO. thanks poolman. any other advise and comments is very welcome as i am going to be a taxi newbie very soon. Of course i still need to travel.
why dont you concentrate on your test first? :)
Ya, i am concentrating on the test.
focus on test ? Walao ... so easy syllabus , i only burnt midnight oil a day before test . The concern is , do you listen to the instructor for testing tips > It's a must to jot down those test questions . My Instructor always say : " Tick this one , this is test question . " .
No stress la TDVL .
It's good to put a plan ahead ..... a concrete plan after u passed , which i would say , sure pass .

what you mean accept ? They have to !! It's a market practise , u want xtra off , pay half of normal rental , the other half he work for it .
Travelling personnel is best never go into OMO .
OMO is someone who is FULLY COMMITTED to driving fulltime , 7 days a week , 365 days , cannot fall sick , no mc , all SOLO .
In any event like fallen ill , wedding dinners , family day , holidays , all is about parting some $$$ into it .
Feeding those taxi companies bosses oso .
Like what i been through , as a relief , then hirer , then fare overhual , then oil crisis , got tired , and rest .
As a relief , it's a better option to becoming a good driver .
Cos no stress , no burden , not much responsibilities like hirer .
Hirer must responsible for rental , must be fully paid accordingly . When time to come , must go servicing for every 3 weeks . When time to come , need to sent for inspection , vehicle any repair needed , must sent for repair , all at the expense of your own income , a bit of jeopardising your normal income .
When i was a hirer , i always pray hard my aircon don't go haywire , to repair aircon , can take up almost 3 hours inside the workshop , it's a nightmare to wait for them , doing nothing .
Some might asked , company compensate for the lost , right ?
My answers is : They only pay us like eg , Sonata , rental $98 , divided by 24 hours , an hour is $4.08 .
That is what they pay us back , $4.08 , x 3 hours .
But if driving , one can earn more than that !!!! .
Pool, thanks a lot for your far sighted view. That's exactly what i did here to post for advice on my plan after TDVL. I took online course and finish it in a day. Book excursion on the same day to shorten waiting time. Just planning ahead so as not to have stupid mistake that others have learnt. Why must i reinvent the Wheels? No need right. All the "Jiang Hu" peoples is right here in the forum.
You are right. Time is precious and is our cost that hurts.
My view is and I think it should be:
Your Rental cost of the day + Fuel Cost (variable)+ Miscellaneous cost divide by the "number of hours your drive for the day"= ???? THAT IS ONLY COST for your hourly rate.
Secondly - how much one's think one's is worth in hourly rate for the driving minus the hourly cost.
what do you think?
Once if become a relief driver and perhaps one day - lim kopi and talk about "taxi economics" with all brudder in this forums.
Anyone any kantau know of any Comfort Delgro taxi hirer who need relief in Queenstown zone?
aiyah, many unofficial kangtaus. go to http://www.cabby.com.sg for a look see. Once u get yr TVL then just register yourself there. Or you can try the free & easy ones, many Trans & SMRT cabs available at selected HDB carparks. (clementi got). just take any available cab, pay the rental and start driving. happy drive not happy rest, morning or nite shift oso ada. I'm wondering about the insurance in case of accident...
advice..all in this forum already. poolie oredy repeated himself many times. the lobangs also many postings. just scan thru, all u need is here.
btw, as a relief, normal hours are 5-5 or 6-6. no such thing as 7-8 or something like that. every condition must be reasonable. the usual conditions already listed in this forum. just lookup poolie's posts.
good luck with the test.
i'm aware of this cabby.com.sg site. don't seems to be active. you see the site today u see jesus waving at you. try it.
i've no standard issue of driving shift of 5-5. Night driving is better for me and more alert.
I did thought of hdb carpark near my area.
really helpful of your advice.
thanks
collected my licence today:
sorry for the blurr picture, my nokia E65 has lousy camera
Congratulations! when are you going to start driving?
Looking around see who needs a relief driver :)
Ok Rotary and maybe CM , don't waste time , once passed , go Comfort @ Sin Ming , go to the reception centre , take a number , and ask for " Hirer looking for relief" listing from those counter aunties .
They will asked : " Which area u looking for ? "
And will add , usually : " Ok i give you Queenstown , Tanglin Halt , Commonwealth , Delta and Tiong Bahru area u check it out yourself .
" Crown or Sonata , or Mercedes ? "
" U currently driving ?"
As for CM , u can go Jurong East St.32 to check with Comfort Taxi Kiosk , they service the same thing like in Sin Ming !~!!!!
master pool, thanks for telling us on comfort relief matching. very informatives for newbies.
ok la , welcome , being a taxi "veteran" in Sgforums , it's good to share .
thanks Pool, will do that !
bro Rotary, just pass your test first den like wat pool said go Comfort reg as relief.
den whack the rds & learn abt this trade, after a few mths you will auto know what to do next eg being a hirer or relief? driving timing? etc
i used to read & plan alot like u b4 i took my tvl but only to find out it's totally different in real life driving
good luck bro
teolk, you all can call me tan instead of Rotary. I just loved and missed the rotary engine technology. You are absolutely right. However it's good to learn from you people all the nitty gritty or otherwise one will tend to "chiong" like a Blur King. I prefer work smart than work hard.
I will pass the test. Thanks Teolk.
