LONDON - TAXI-DRIVERS are Britain's grumpiest workers, according to a survey on Monday, while secretaries are the happiest.
The gloomy prospect of ferrying around strangers every day makes taxi-drivers laugh less than any other profession, according to the survey of 4,000 workers.
Drivers cited traffic jams, the rising cost of petrol, drunken passengers and frisky couples as reasons not to be cheerful.
Fitness instructors could lighten up too, with just 0.9 per cent of them saying they enjoy a giggle in the gym.
Those in recruitment could also do with a good dose of humour, the survey said, as just 3.8 per cent laughed regularly during the working day.
By contrast, 53.5 per cent of secretaries said they laughed on a regular basis during a working day, with a quarter of those surveyed confessing that most of their amusement comes from watching the stressful lives of their disgruntled bosses.
Other workers scoring high on the laughter scale were, perhaps surprisingly, accountants - many of whom said they regularly played pranks or wound up their workmates to alleviate the daily grind - and teachers.
The results of the survey, conducted for comedy TV channel G.O.L.D. also revealed a correlation between laughter at work and days off taken sick.

Cabbies, how do you think?
i heard in London alone , not many English drive a cab .
This profession mainly dominated by people of Slovakians , Turkish , Serbians etc and so on people from other part of Europe .
Well ... foreigners driving a cab ... well well , not familiar with London's road add their already stressful life i guessed .
In S'pore , what stress ?
From one end to another end , from Jurong West to Changi Airport , the most is 45 minutes drive without jams . Even if i hear u grumble , can be only for 45 minutes , not too bad la , don't really can make my day bad .
U got on board , i pressed meter , finish the trip , u pay , no stress la .
Drunkards ? We have patrol cars on the road to assist us , so again , not an issue .
Our security system makes cabbies drive without much anxiety and stress .
So Singapore cabbies should be a happy lot .
Every 10 paxes , maybe just 1 make me miserable .....
But not everyday , everyday mostly paxes make my day ...
I for one , were a happy one .
Good food in S'pore , good roads , well traffic management system ( although expensive ) , many foreign gals to flirt with ... much more interesting than the survey done in London , at least Singapore garmen at the moment , dun disturb our profession , as in add woes , add in foreign troops into our fleet .
Keep up that positive attitude...
