" Shouldn't we pay lower cab fares as we offer a confirmed 'sale'?"
By reader Gurmit Singh Kullar ( My Point : ST Forum 28-04-2009 )
Here is a simple irony commuters endure : Why do we pay more when we book a taxi by telephone ? Shouldn't we pay lower cab fares as we offer cabbies a confirmed 'sale' without the taxi driver having to prowl the streets for fares ?
Another anomaly is the peak hour surcharge . There is clearly more people in need of a cab at peak hour than at other times .So taxi drivers would not need to hunt for pax . Why should we pay surcharges when there is no need to compensate for any loss of business ?
Given that there are also CDB and PH surcharges , why does increased demand require require an incentive for cabbies to seek business ?
All surcharges , except the midnight one , should be scrapped , with fares starting at $4 and paxes paying to pass ERP gantries
typical singh concept ....
he should stop writing and drive a taxi for a week .

HAHAHA!!! I like your song.
All those extra charges are part of the package, like AWC, bonus can be part of your salary package.
Without these surcharges, it will take double the time to make a sufficient income. Traffic jams can steal away time (during the 35% peak hour), eg. without jam a taxi can pick up twice as much trips.
On sundays and holidays, without all these surcharges taxi drivers need almost twice the time needed to cover their overheads and that's almost because of lesser traffic. If kena traffic jam sure need more than twice the time.
They can take away the surcharge but the flag down meter fare has to be drastically increased. If not taxi driving cannot make a living.
peak hr more demand so should not charge more?
Aiyo...never mind than maybe singh can write another letter to all taxi companies, since he is so interested about deduction on fare and we cabbies...He must missed today on ST money page on this artucle...
Quote On China, group managing director Kua Hong Pak said margins "are very good. at over 20 per cent". He added that the risk of doing business there "are well managed".
But he admitted that the taxi business in Britain, Vietnam and Singapore have been less rosy, as ridership in Britain has been affected by the downturn while market in Vietnam and Singapore has diluted margins.
Lasy year, the group spent $77 million on benefit for taxi-drivers in order to retain them.
So Uncle Alvin do you got any benefits from them as a partime relief?
