do taxi drivers rely on GPS to navigate around singapore? i consider the maps in Iphone very helpful but you must sign data plan with singtel.
Your views please.
i dunno others .... my GPS inside my head .
if using a handphone or sms is dangerous while driving , looking at the GPS also one kind of dangerous .
I dunno others , i cannot focus on my road if i keep looking at the tiny 4" LCD screen .
I dunno , maybe i am not good enough to do 2 things @ 1 time while driving .
I care for my own safety .
So i learn by the hard way ....
So hard i always got headache , hahahahaha .... brain congestions !
the GPS inside Comfort's fleet is crap !!!!
Slow ... very slow .
By the time the map appears , i reached destination liao . The loading damn slow .
The more software they instal , they slower the response .
my advice : Technology helps , but as far as driving is concern , it's best to learn roads by the traditional ways , the most effective as far as i am concern .
I do not want to rely too much and learn nothing .
I want to be learn something and it permanently kept inside my head thru the most tradtional most effective ways .
Ask around , how many old bird cabbies use GPS while driving ?
anyway S'pore so tiny , it's a joke to tell people i need a GPS to navigate in S'pore .
i encountered one cabbie......
i told him the destination.... then he on the GPS..... and started driving.....
一 drive, 一 poke the screen..... and i think he not bery sek with the device..... poke wrong thing..... then restart..... spell road name oso spell damn slow....
sometimes eye on the road, sometimes eye on the screen....
so dangerous
when the thing is finally up (as in, working, not the up as in erection), im almost reaching liao.........
=.+
what F1 said , summed up in short what i am trying to interpret .
Good drivers don't need any technology . Sorry about that .

For me if encounter and probelm, just politely call the cablink operator for help.
That is my GPS.
i is not F1
singapore so small liao.
seriously i will get lost in the eastern part, seldom go there
but if i become taxi driver and spend few months driving around i think i should know the roads better
so far for direction me
a)rely on myself
b)double check with pax
c)check street directory
d)sms friends
e)never use GPS
f)never called comfort
OK...This is your test, use what is available as you mention.
Uncle i want to go to old tampines road.
From Takashimaya.
so far the direction me
a) asked customer prefer route ( even if i know )
b) check directory
c) instinct ( funny , never gets wrong )
d) gps ? what gps ?
e) sms ? offense to sms while driving .
f)call comfort ? yes , they for call only , ON-CALL !
P/S : Comfort Hotline meant for Booking Enquiries , not Street Enquiries . My friend got a phone call from HQ that he congested the hotline asking irrelevant enquiries , outside booking issues . Got warn .
It's a skill to how i ask customer which way to go ?
Say from Takashimaya SC to Tampines ... i will ask : " CTE > PIE ? " Or ECP ?
Even if i know Nicholl highway , i only gave them my choice , not their choice ! Unless they knew and specific .
No way i asked : " Do u want me to go by Nicholl highway ? "
This is what i call dig your own grave .
if they specific Nicholl Highway , i would asked further : " U don't mind those jams at Guillemard Road , right ? Now jam not cheap u know ? $0.20 per 25 secs . "

Must ask which part of Old Tampines Road , Flora Road also Old Tampines Road !
Anyhow go , later headache .
if this knn customer tell me , Old Tampines Road , i straight away say : " Hello , u got any idea how long is Old Tampines Road , Hougang side also Old Tampines Road , many chinese temple stretch also Old Tampines Road , Tampines Ikea also Old Tampines Road , Pasir Ris also got one Old Tampines Road . "
Logically Old Tampines Old , i will give them 2 question : " Hougang side or Pasir Ris Side ? "
Simple .... the more u emphasis , the more they confuse .
