SINGAPORE : Taxi drivers in Singapore will soon be getting some extra money in their pockets.
Taxi companies said they will pass on a 30 per cent government road tax rebate — announced during the Budget — to their drivers.
This works out to about S$306 a year for each taxi.
The rebate will kick in from July.
But ComfortDelGro — which has a fleet of over 15,000 — said it will start payouts earlier, in March.
It will also give out the money in cash over a shorter period.
So instead of a S$25.50 monthly payment over 12 months, it will give out S$51 each month over six months.
SMRT will also pass on the cost savings in full, but said it has not decided how this will be done.
Smart Cabs said it will credit the money to its drivers’ Medisave accounts from July. — CNA/ms
Credit to Medisave a/c?
Might as well don't give.

SMRT Taxis to pass S$306 in road tax rebate savings to cabbies
SINGAPORE : SMRT cabbies will be receiving a one-time cash payout
from their fleet operator five months before the government's road tax
rebate kicks in.
SMRT Taxis, which operates over 3,000 taxis in Singapore, said the
full rebate of S$306 per hirer will be credited directly into their
bank accounts on February 28.
Lo Chee Wen, vice president of SMRT Taxis, said: "Even as the
company receives the road tax rebates over a 12-month period starting
July 2009, we want to give our hirers the full savings in a one-time
payment much earlier to help them cope financially."
SMRT Taxi said it will also work to improve the income
opportunities for its cabbies by liaising with retail outlets,
furniture malls and property owners of tourist attractions, and
corporate clients to provide tailored taxi services.
Other measures already in place for its cabbies include competitive
taxi rental packages starting from S$65 per day, cash bonuses,
rent-free days, diesel subsidies and rebates amounting to more than
S$10 million each year.
Last month, SMRT said it would not apply to increase fares this year.
It has also pledged to donate S$300,000 to assist needy commuters with their transport needs.

Better than nothing...
companies… taxi companies talk as if they are the ones helping cabbies from their own pocket… shit the taxi companies man… hope they collapse
Aiyo Alvin kor kor how can, they alway pretending lah, look outside all petrol stations already diesel down with 0.04 cts and weeks ahead and somemore with higher grade.
what... now we are buying lower grade and week later than the price adjust and only 0.03cts. where they can collapse. save and sound lah. can never happen, where is all the fuel rebates now already abolished, they told this is your benefit so this also gone the incentive as they promise when you join them. ya.
They should further reduce the rental fee for the cabbies thus reducing the stress and pressure most cabbies faced currently.I pity for the honest cabbies..I did receive many offers from my cabby friends to become their relief on my off days.
