A RARE technical glitch has paralysed the mobile data terminals - necessary for call bookings and cashless payments - of hundreds of ComfortDelGro taxis.
From as early as 9am on Wednesday, queues snaked along ComfortDelGro's Sin Ming Drive service centre as cabbies arrived in droves to have the problem fixed.
By 10.30am, traffic police were on hand to direct drivers, as the deluge of cabs in the vicinity was snaring traffic.
Entrances to the Fiat showroom next door and lanes to several workshops in the area were blocked.
Most of the cabbies waited patiently - some for nearly an hour - for their turn, but there were the occasional temper flaring as some drivers jumped queue.
A cabby who would only be known as Mr Lim said: 'When I started my cab this morning, the terminal hung. There was only a message to say to come here.
'This is on our time and money... I don't expect the company to compensate us,' griped a cab driver.
Another cabby, a Mr Omar, said he had heard about the fault from fellow drivers as early as Tuesday night.
A ComfortDelGro spokesman said the problem was due to 'a slight technical glitch' but did not elaborate.
She said only 1 per cent of Comfort's 15,000 taxis was affected.
'Affected taxis have since made their way to our service centre to reset the terminals,' she said at 10am.
When The Straits Times checked at 11am, the queue was close to 500m long.
One visibly upset cabby was overheard saying to a colleague: 'This would never happen back when we were using radio dispatch.'
Comfort said it was investigating the cause of the problem.

The air bursts last night was to disable all those who had hacked their orignal programs.
If they hadn't send me on wild goose chases I would not have gotten myself one of this 'better' programs.
Never a 100% foolproof technology.
Even my MDT wasn't spared, my poor day shift hirer has to go to 383 Sin Ming Drive to fix the problem!

Dun laugh alvin. Morning damn jia-lat. Every passenger flag have to ask first paying by cash or nets. If nets or credit card sorry buay-hu, system down so can't pick you. No bookings so have to cruise more, use more diesel.
yeah oxford will say knn you...you are supposed to ensure all equipment in working order. don't pass go, don't collect $200..go to jail directly. Yah, cablink workshop opens at 8am (i think) so from 5am-8am better you go home and sleep so as not to cause inconvenience to taxi passengers. If the problem is epidemic, ALL Comfort/CityCab taxis must stop work immediately and go to service center so as not to hurt the feelings of passengers paying by nets or credit card. Who cares about your rental. It's your problem cos you chose to be a taxi driver.
btw where is my $25 rental rebate promised??? Newspaper write big big CDG spokesman promised this wor.
"Big sound and not accurate" Comfort. Until now the promised $25 rebate No Picture No Sound. CDG NATO (no action, talk only). Yah $25 not a big sum, but tak shiok lor. So how CDG? When will you payout? Any affected bros already received the $$$?
