Cab fares should be more transparent?

The flag-down rate displayed on the inside of taxi doors is both anachronistic and misleading.
Even the shortest taxi trip which does not pass through any Electronic Road Pricing gantry will incur a fare of around $5. After the cabby has added on any charges, the fare becomes about $10, and sometimes, higher.
Hail a taxi along Mount Elizabeth Road to go to the ebarby Tanglin Club - via Cairnhill and Scotts roads - and the meter will show $4.40, but with the ad-ons, the cabby is looking for $10.
Spend 80 cents on a newspaper at 7-Eleven and you get a receipt without asking. With taxi fares in the region of $10, why do commuters not get a receipt detailing the mysterious add-ons which, like the fuel surcharge by airlines, more than double the metered fare?
Must we protest at Speaker's Corner to get taxi operators to be more transparent with the fares they charge?

And that's coming from a Singaporean. What about visitors to our country, they look at me, the taxi driver as if I had taken them for a ride. How do you explain to them our surcharges, it is going to take some real convincing for them to understand why when they come it was only $4 and to go back it costs $10.

Anyway, what do you think of a flat flag down fare of $6 (at least) and no surcharges, even midnight surcharge.

last time people say no matter how much u spent on a cab it won't be more expensive then a car..
now.. lol go for 1km can hit 10 buck -
from my house to school already can hit $10. and thats like only 7 to 8 bus stops away.
now taxi meter jump faster than heart, suddenly $3 jump to $3.20
and why when not moving, the meter jumps faster? doesnt make sense

last time.. i student.. take cab from my house to school only cost me $5..
now take cab to my old school same distance and time.. cost me $12

Fare $6, erp $4, add up to $10, do u know cabby earn only $6, the other $4 is pocket by goverment. Yet ppl complain cabby cao kuan. ??? Who is the one who suffer??? Who is the one that gain???

when i read newspaper, airline up fare... i think... not my business... i can avoid... when i read mee pok up $0.50... knn... cannot dont eat... so if u feel taxi fare is expensive or unreasonable, u have a lot of other options... not necessarily must take cab... but if u too pampered, then i can't help u...

so far tourist very seldom ask about the surcharges or complain about taxi fare... only a few indian tourists ask me....got once, family of 4 take my cab from city hall to esplanade... about $10 cos surcharge and one big u turn...my fault?...not forgetting i paid $2 from my own pocket to get into CBD...

i normally like ask them to keep the change.. but some drivers.. attitude suck like shit.. ask them why must add $3? they give me the tu lan face.. pu bor la

ok, I am cabby, sometimes i do take cab. Tell the uncle the location, he keep quiet, tell him after this traffic turn left, he keep quiet, tell him to stop after the bus stop, he keep quiet. Even after I pay the fare, oso no thank you, this kind of cabby, I will never give a tip to them. Reward those cabby who provide good services.

agree. some times i take cab, cabby doesnt even smile a bit. at least smile or say hello mah... me very polite cabby.... will at least hi and smile. you ask me to turn left right centre, i will say ok thank you.

i love those taxis drivers that actually talk to us.. even we never.. will ask like.. why we gogin there and such.. then the trip won't be so boring mah

got one time after the cab fare risethen i need take cab as 579 end liao mah,then that cabby he very talkative one leh,he ask go where,talk the children studies,blah lah... then he turn wrong way.At first i already tell him Tampines St 41 then he turn rochor rd leh.

yah, advisable for cabby not to talk too much... i only chat with pax if they start first... otherwise, pax may think we ask too much or too talkative... e.g on the way to geylang, u want to ask pax what is he going there for? got one pax go geylang, he asked me which lor got transvesite?... i just answered him politely but tonelessly.... that's all... show any emotion, and you risk having more problem... haha
