The Diet Coke he ordered seems pointless after everything he ordered.
I completely agree with your point
reminds me of my pediatrician friend telling us that a father told him that his child was overweight and "should probably" exercise. my friend wanted to tell the parent that he should do the same.
From sgag:
I still find it very difficult to understand why people would take the day off to buy an overpriced phone which is only incrementally better than the last iteration.
Fanboys, hard to understand them...
They would be willing to part with their money for even a piece of wood...

or the people who Q up overnight for the hello kitty or the opening of H&M and other stores
I told some kakis that iphone 5c was 800+ bucks.
They didn't believe me.
And these aren't Apple users.
The irony?
Even non-iphone users find it incredulous the way Apple is going.
Come to think of it... If you put it another way, I would take leave just to queue up for apple new iphone...
Gotta see queue how many hours b4 hand though, becoz that new iphone is fetching high price for some of the richer asian foreigners...
I know of some who flew specifically to Singapore and hire people just to help them queue...

In other words, some people in the queue are just there to make a buck and not interested in the phone itself.
Reminds me of the Hello Kitty saga. I can still see people trying their darndest to sell off their Hello Kitty toys from McDonalds.

He should have said so and added that they can bond and motivate each other.

Yes. There are ppl in singapore who makes tries to make a quick buck at buying goods which he/she perceive that the demand will be high (thus high price).
The more techy ppl even have automated programs to help them buy popular concert tickets...
Of coz end of the day, not everything is sold off. Could be due to drop in demand, sell to slow or sell too expensive...

he just didn't know how to do it, was embarrassed etc

Nthing like the sight of an obese kid running, with his dad (and his flabby tummy), into the orange hue of the sunset...
hokay, drama aside, it does make a good father-son bonding session. Though it feels kinda wierd to say bonding when refering to exercise or gym

In my capacity as a combat medic specialist I have said a lot of potentially embarrassing things to no-duff casualties (e.g. I told one guy he had suspected gonorrhoea after he had pus in his pee and admitted to having a ONS two weeks before).
I never thought I'd hear about a medical doctor being too embarrassed to discuss a real medical condition.
Besides, the doctor could have said it tactfully, such as 'You know, it would be beneficial to both yourself and your son if the both of you were to take up a more active lifestyle together. Studies have shown that weight loss and fitness goals are more easily attainable when two or more people work together.'

If the price is right, why not?
but I can assure you that getting FTs or PRs to queue up is much cheaper...

Frisbee I can understand, much like catch ball (which is a popular bonding tool in the ang moh countries)...
Cycle, sure, I can understand that too...
But chasing birds...? I can imagine 1 round adult and 1 round kid running after birds and suddenly the round kid fell and roll and roll and roll and roll ... ... ... and roll in the gress, laughing happily with butterflies flying around...

All this is killing innovation (or maybe someone suggest a better word)... Seriously...
Nowadays kids are taught that "there is only 1 right way"... Which is why fresh grads nowadays are extremely rigid in their thinking and always "refer to what we learnt in school", which is often not applicable in the real working world...
if a child paint the sun purple, is he being creative or is he just wrong?
Back when I was teaching in NUS, I always got irked when undergrads came up to me when their (conceptually-correct) solutions didn't match my 'model solution'.
I had to keep telling them that there is no 'model solution'. As long as the underlying concepts are correct, there can be many different ways of doing the same question.
That totally unnerved some of them who were used to finding out what the 'model answer' was and to stick to it no matter what.
Sad to say that that seems to be how they have been raised over the years.
