  its a wing tip. its just there to reduce the vortex created at the tip of the wings.
  technically, the plane can still fly.
  
  anyway, people not in aviation go crazy just because a weather radar is not working.
  
  but professionally, you shouldn't let the plane go.

  the Sri Lankan plane supposedly lost about 5ft worth of wing
  
  still, safe or not, i ain't flyin' in a plane which is missing part of their wing...
