I think its very tricky. If one dun speak, or speak too little, one seems stoic, introvert. If speak too much too fast, one easily create bad karma. Must walk between the fine line... If dun speak, everyone just makan makan, and then stare at beer can or plates of tibits, food, etc. If speak too much then, its like verbal diarrhea... Joking is fine, but must have tactic. Cross the line, its just rude or silly...
Sianz, social gathering... Prefer to go read Buddhist books at home, relax and no create bad karma... But then if no go social gathering, its against social taboo, especially chinese new year... $@$%^... Maybe I should just attend social gathering, time myself to sit for 20-30 minutes, and then run road. I think thats a good idea...
aiya who tie you ? why the compulsory CNY gatherings ? show face that you are not dead ? (joking ha)

i also don't like. but also think it's not a good example. a bodhisattva not like that one. they do socialise and in the midst of socialising, they teach dharma to people.
see:
四法 (or 四事) catuḥ-saṃgraha-vastu; four all-embracing (bodhisattva) virtues: (1) 布施 dna, giving what others like, in order to lead them to love and receive the truth; (2) 愛語 priyavacana, affctionate, speech, with the same purpose; (3) 利行 arthakṛtya, conduct proftable to others, with the same purpose; (4) 事 samnrthat, co-operation with and adaptation of oneself to others, to lead them into the truth.

In the past, CNY gathering was like preaching day, my family members would preach to me. Luckily, they gave up after many years of preaching. Starting from last year, I è€³æ ¹æ¸…å‡€ã€‚
I feel closer to my dharma friends than relatives. My dharma friends also feel the same. I think my close relatives also feel the same. I find that they will not tell me their problems, they wait till I left and talk among themselves. Last Christimas gathering, I saw one of them was crying. Anyway, since they think that they can't share just because of different religion, I also can't be bothered. May be they feel embarrass to tell me because in the past, they always tell me God bless them. I feel that they only tell me the good news but never the bad news. Very strange.
Not long ago, Straits Times reported that Singaporeans are closer to people with the same religion and find the trend is disturbing but it is true.

it also mean people are more religious. 人云, 相与谋。
i find that westerner however are more ok. like fengshui or tarot cards, Singaporean x'tian will say it's against their religion, while westerner are more ok.
Chinese New Year gatherings are very superficial for me. I don't enjoy any of them. Its always about fa chai and get rich. Not my cup of tea. I feel very out of place during this time of the year. Can't wait for it to be over. I believe I am not alone in this thought.
Strangely, I can't seem to be able to post a reply to the tread "Any living enlightened Master". Did someone block my posting there or is this something out of the norm? Perhaps Someone out there didn't want me to post just yet.

i tested, it's ok. try again later bah...
ya..i kind of prefer around Christmas and New year period. haha..got company shut down. but not in CNY....
thanks, sinweiy. I will wait for a while before I post. I felt there is a reason for this.
CNY in Singapore is fill with festival mood. There are lively fun shows welcoming in the New Year, there are flea markets selling many types of flowers which you will hardly see on normal days and so many types of CNY cookies. Free performance along Marina Bay.
I enjoy CNY more and more in Singapore after you tried spending it in other countries. No noise, no festive mood, no performance. It's worse. The food fare can't be compared too.
It's a great time to eat, soak in the festive celebrations and watch TV.
it is still the meanings u attach to it....
social gathering is a mass of people coming together for the purpose of "being happy" ... its good to fill one another with joy...if u "karmisticize" it...it becomes a meaningless puddle
You need "karma" to be together, eat together and socialise at the same place in the same time.
CNY can also be great off days to accumulate good karma. Instead of the normal social gatherings, you can also gather with others to pray, chant , release animals etc. It's social gathering of another type.
surely....but it is still the meanings u attach to it....for the good of it to your own conscientious definitions....
u need not ritualize its natural goodness...

then Thaipusam should not exist too. Neither Christmas or Valentine's Day.
but they are special occasions in the hearts of many. Also great times to earn profits.
If rituals do not exist , this world will be very boring and less colorful.
Just be mindful. Speak a lot also nevermind if you have mindfulness.
Anyway, every year we meet at my dharma teacher's house for CNY. The things we discuss there are how we practiced the dharma for the past one year. Think it is meaningful.
Replying to Zenist69..
I think its just another social situation, if we go to work we need to talk to people also... what if ur boss ask u to eat dinner with him?
We should practise Right Speech, meaning refrain from falsehood, stealing, slandering, harsh words and frivolous talks.
This way you can talk as much as you want during the CNY gathering, but wont create bad karma.
this attitude to social situations is pretty common and probably necessary to mature our understanding of the dharma.
its a big circle afterall.
