Explanation of the Shurangama Mantra by Venerable Master Hsuan Hua

You shouldn’t assume that you understand everything there is to know. If you think you know everything already, then you haven’t truly understood the Buddhadharma. ---Ven. Master Hsuan Hua
Fall back to basics, the shurangama sutra is not for the faint hearted.
Any practitioner who studies and practises the sutra, but do not keep pure precepts, will get himself into serious mental afflictions and trouble.
I need not add further, but just don't study the sutra unless you are ready.
If you want your carnality, your mcdonalds, and your reunion dinner on chinese new year eve, then stay away from the shurangama sutra.
AND I MEAN IT.
serious.
You're better off taking the basic five precepts first. No kidding. If you cannot do the basic basket of five, don't bother to even talk about opening wisdom. The Noble Eightfold Path is about Sila(virtue), Samadhi(Concentration), and vajrna(wisdom). It is not about being Gungho and showing off to the girl next door that you attained superhuman wisdom.

Shurangama Sutra covers basics as well, especially the importance of precepts in order to develope samadhi and wisdom.
Yes, at the same time, it is not for the faint hearted.
sorry, concerned parenting.
too much babysitting as a teenager.
my grandmother will go, cannot even take care of yourself still want to take care of others. moderating posts and babysitting teenagers are thankless jobs.
sorry i take back my words. it is where the real wisdom is.

You mean you're a teenager who babysits children?
Ha, no, low-income family, too many kids. Eldest in family. There are alwys hidden corners in singapore... when i look out my kitchen window at my HDB block opposite.. it's the old design where 3room flats face each other, and u see interesting phenomena. Every window is a TV channel, your eyeball muscles are the remote control that allows you to switch channels, it is even better than MioTV.
have fun...
=)
Highly recommend serious study/reading of this sutra. Esp for people who are interested in meditation. The new English translation looks good and is also available at Evergreen bookshop at Third Floor of Pearl Center.
This is a slow version of Shurangama Mantra i found.. its quite good, slow chanting.. for beginners like me i find it easier to follow.

The Shurangama Mantra helps to open wisdom. With wisdom we won’t do muddled things.
The Shurangama Sutra emphasize precepts in the chapter on the four clear instructions of purity, which we ought to follow. It will improve our precept holding.
It doesn’t mean that we don’t study the Shurangama Sutra and Mantra because we are afraid of something and just keep the five precepts and we will be fine. It’s the same as the people saying that they don’t want to hold the five precepts or study Buddhism because they want to continue to drink, womanize, kill, steal etc. If everybody thinks this way, how can they become Arhats, Bodhisattvas, Buddhas in the future. And because they think they are not holding precepts so it’s fine to commit them once in a while, twice in a while etc. they will not refrain themselves and commit transgressions. We all know that only by observing precepts do we get a human body. It’s is not appropriate to state that the Shurangama sutra and mantra are not for the faint hearted. Why are people faint hearted when they see the Sutra? Because they can’t keep the precepts or the teachings of the Sutra. We have to face our own faults and change them, not claim the Dharma as unsuitable for us because we are unwilling to change.
Nowadays, people are always talking about lofty states of mind and no one is emphasizing on precepts which is something that is very important. From beginners to the most advance practitioners, precepts are the foundation for samadhi. everyone should strive to observe precepts purely.
I would recommend Shurangama Sutra to people with some basic understanding of Buddhism at least, but not to an absolute beginner.
