Do we have to do this?
No need. Being vegetarian in itself is purifying. Simply putting it, it terminates the nemesis towards them from the past that they eat our flesh. Further is the vegetarian of mind, and transfer merits & blessings to them all.
I nt vegetarian, still eat meat. Everyday must purify this bad karma?
i do heard of a mantra which one can use. but u don't every time do on purpose and think that u can always do this. you need to feel remorse rather than complacent.

Thats's what the tibetians monks chant before eating?
What are the karmic consequences of eating meat?
"Now I have occassional thoughts on being a vegetarian.
I cut down alot on the meat I eaten.
2 out of my 3 meals vegetarian meals.

could be, but i learned from Ven Hai Tuo 海涛法师, whom do liaise with tibetians lamas. Ven Hai Tuo is well learned Venerable from Taiwan.
i won't want to say as it normally say if u eat them one ounce, next time they will eat you back 8 pound, as it's hard to accept. however eating meat does form a disparity (opposite of affinity) with sentient being. they will dislike u. in the furture, they'll create burden or hinderance in the path of liberation, especially the heart of loving kindness. i think not just hinder the path but also your daily life. life wouldn't be smooth.

u can do it gradually.
to me a piece of meat one eat, use a 1000 more times of vege/crop to rise the animal. And that 1000 times of vege can actually feed many many hungry people in the world.

If buddha is truly benevolent, he will do away with karma and bless everyone.
karma is like taking revenge. In fact, I think no good monks should speak of karma.

I think you're mistaken about the Buddha, he is not a creator who make rules as such, karma is the natural law of cause and effect.
Every action has an (opposite?) reaction.
Eg put it in simplified terms.if someone deprives you of your life due to anger or greed or any other reasons, do you feel not the perpetuator is responsible in any way? Don't you think life is precious?
Or another way, you reap what you sow.
pure emptiness,
You are not able to fully purify the karma of eating meat... to perform COMPLETE purification, one has to have the factor of regret and resolve not to do it again. If one is still continuing to eat, then obviously the factor of regret is not strong and also there is no resolve to abstain in future. However, don't let this discourage you from reciting mani mantras and the Buddhas' names to purify yourself to whatever extent there is, as it will always be better to do more practice than none.
Although full purification is not possible, it is always proposed that one should dedicate merits to benefit the animals that we consume. Dedicate merits from your practice so that they will have a good rebirth, meet with the dharma, and attain liberation from samsara.
A master who attained enlightenment once said that animals are the most suffering because their ignorance stops them from regretting their past misdeeds (which led to their present sufferings...) and so revolve for a long time in the lower rebirths. The hell beings and hungry ghosts still have the ability to see their past and repent or regret, thus lightening their karma and giving them a way out in future...
So if one is eating meat, at the same time, by this karmic link one is creating with the animal, one should try one's best to make positive wishes and prayers for the animals and dedicate merits to this end. One should do it everyday... as much as possible. This will also lighten the karmic debt between you and these animals.
Hope this helps!
I wanna be vegetarian but because I go near shop selling food I got tempted. Not so easy to be vegetarian.
The greed of food have to be reduced first.

You can make a promise to go veg from a certain date onwards, it can firm up the resolution.

Ok. Nice advice.
indeed zero is right. do it on special day such as every 1st and 15th date of every lunar month. that way even if one fall into lower realm, the power of the precept will reduce one's suffering when it come to every 1st and 15th date of every lunar month.

Yes.
Hi Pure Emptiness,
To be vegetarian also need sufficient causes and conditions or what we call, merits. Try to accumulate merit and make prayers to succeed in your virtuous wish. I am sure you can do it, if you keep trying...
First start with gradual reduction, maybe only one meal a day with meat... so your body can adjust too... people who take vegetarian for long time, fish, meat smells not so good to them... it is a matter of habit / getting used to it.
If you succeed in reducing your meat intake, already you are creating virtue and saving lives indirectly.
Read up a bit about nutrition facts, you need to make sure you stay healthy.
I also want to say that many vegetarian stores that i've encountered are not really selling healthy vegetarian fare, they add far too much MSG and so forth... so be aware of this. You should try to have organic meals and prepare your own meals at home and so forth. But it is a gradual shift... don't be impatient, just learn more recipes, ways of managing meals, mix with friends who are vegetarians who can give you many tips.. etc.
Hi Pure Emptiness
It is not easily to be a vegetarian consider the 5 senses temptation when one walked past the hawker stall.
Although I am not a vegetarian recently during my temple retreat I enquiry the guest speaker who was a black female Nichiren Shu priest, why she is a full time vegetarian since our traditon does not require a believer to be one unless one embark on a Novice or special training in the main temple in Japan. She told me that her master, who was a white Nichiren Shu priest request her to be during the Novice training. The reason the master give was, how can one build one sensual pleasure on another suffering. In this case, the suffering party is the animal. Beside, most of the animal die in a violent way especially in the American slaughterhouse. Therefore, by partaking in the meat, I am consuming their violence suffering into my life. Suprisingly, since becoming a vegetarian, she has become more gentle less easily angitated.
The word just impact me in a way or another which did set me to review my eating habit.
Currently, our tradition practice and encourage people to chant, " Namu Myo Ho Renge Kyo, å—無妙法蓮è¯ç¶“" 3 times, as a form of thankgiving to all sentient being which include farmers, deliveryman etc, mother nature, the Sun, moon and etc and even the animal for sacrificing their life so that we are able to sustain our life as we believe in 相互ä¾å˜, interedependent life relationship.

Namu Myoho Renge Kyo
Chant namu myoho renge kyo? I tot it's supposed to be Nam Myoho Renge Kyo?
o if u look at the chinese character there is 7 indvidual word, every word is link to a syllabus.
 NA
ç„¡ MU
妙 MYO
法 HO
è“® REN
 GE
經 KYO
However, Nichiren Shoshu (NSA) and SGI tend to shorten 無 "NAMU" into "NAM", it is like saying THANK instead of THANK YOU.
Beside, there is variation between Nichiren Shu and NSA/SGI doctrine. We are a main stream buddhist sect in Japan. We are a member of Japan Buddhist Federation. We believe in historical Shayamuni Buddha, as the original Buddha and Nichiren Shoin is a manifested Bodhisattva who came to this world to remind us about the preciousness of Lotus Sutra.
Wheras NSA/SGI believe that Nichiren Shoin is the original Buddha and Shayamuni is his manifestation.
