29 October 2010 Friday is Lha Bab Duchen. According to tibetan traditions,Lha Bab Duchen is one of the four important dates commemorating four events in the life of Shakyamuni Buddha. It is the day to commemorate Buddha’s descent from heaven. Buddha’s mother was reborn in Indra’s heaven. To repay her kindness and to liberate her from samsara, and also to give teachings to benefit the gods, Buddha ascended to
the Trayastrimsha heaven and spent three months in the realm of the gods.
As Buddha was away from the earth for quite some time, his human disciples began to worry. One of his Great Disciples, Anuruddha, could see the Buddha amongst the gods and reassured the others. After three months, Maudgalyayana, another of the Great Disciples, requested the Buddha to return to earth. The Buddha agreed and informed that he would return in a week's time, so on the 7th day, Indra and Brahma made three ladders of precious gems and stones such as lapis lazuli, gold and crystal. At the appointed time, the Buddha descended the flight of steps with Indra and Brahma on either side to be received by crowds gathered at the foot of the ladder.
It is said that on this day, the effects of positive or negative actions are multiplied ten million times.
On this special day on 29 October 2010 Friday from 8pm to 10pm, we engage you to join us in the First Foundation Practice and Recitation of Samantabhadra’s Aspiration Prayer at our centre. Also in celebration of the end of 2010 and in welcoming the new year of 2011, on 31 December 2010 from 8pm to 10pm, we also invite you to join us in the same practice and recitation. It is a great and auspicious way to end the past year and to invite the fabulous forthcoming one.
