Land authority welcomes suggestions on sites for community and recreational useTHE Singapore Land Authority (SLA) is glad there has been much positive media and public feedback on the opening up of state land for community and recreational use.
Public-spirited readers like Mr Patrick Tan ('Open up state land now for recreational use', ST, Sept 25) also support the SLA's efforts to open up more state land for community and recreational use.
So far, the SLA has opened up 153 plots (251ha) of vacant land, equivalent to about 200 football fields, to the public for community use.
For the convenience of the public, they are generally located near residential estates.
Mr Tan feels the 'Enter at your own risk' sign is over-protective.
These signs are erected to remind users they are responsible for their own safety when on the land. They are not meant to deter anyone from using the land for their recreational activities.
In the Straits Times of Sept 15 ('More state land to be opened up for recreation'), it was reported another 100 plots of vacant land will be made accessible to the public over the next two years.
The SLA typically consults and receives feedback from the ground before deciding on sites for community and recreational use.
Our target is to identify another 100 sites over the next two years.
We look forward to public suggestions on the location of suitable sites, as they are the ones who will benefit from their use.

[email protected]Besides opening up vacant land, the SLA has facilitated the sharing of school fields with grassroots organisations at two schools - Fuchun Secondary and Temasek Secondary.
Similar initiatives are being undertaken by the Ministry of Education and the Singapore Sports Council (SSC).
The SLA has also partnered the SSC to make available sports fields in Marina South and Dunearn Road for public use.
Last year, we assisted Ayer Rajah constituency by granting a licence to the grassroots organisations to use a large plot of vacant land at West Coast Road for sports and recreation.WE WOULD like to thank Mr Lee Kip Lee ('Convert vacant plot into playing field'; ST, Sept 25) for his feedback on the vacant land at the junction of Dunearn Road and Eng Neo Avenue.
We are pleased to inform Mr Lee we are carrying out grass cutting and other general improvement works on the site in the next few weeks.
When completed by the end of this month, residents will be welcome to use the field for community and recreational purposes.
