  From the dictionary:
  Friar: A male member of a religious order that originally relied solely on alms
  
  But I always thought that Friar is a shortform or nickname for Franciscans Priests.

  Fr = Father (unless I'm wrong)

  It's just like Mister is Mr instead of Mi.
  
  But then... from the www.dictionary.com
  Fr also stands for Friar and Friar is "a member of a religious order, esp. the mendicant orders of Franciscans, Dominicans, Carmelites, and Augustinians. "

  Well if you go to the Dominicans' house in Serrangoon Garden, the sign says Dominican Fathers. They are all friars, though.

  The Dominicans are a mendicant order. A mendicant order is made up of friars, but a friar may not necessarily be a priest. The Franciscans have a creed, 'Some are priests, but all are brothers.'
  
  'Friar' can be used to address priests or brothers. 'Father' for priests only. You can call the brothers 'Brother'
  
  Friar is like a common title. I think it makes more sense to address people by their rank.
