About Lent

Lent is the period of 40 days from Ash Wednesday to Holy Saturday, excluding the 6 Sundays (they are not days of penance...Church tradition has always excluded fasting and penance on Sundays).

The liturgical colour of Lent is violet. It symbolises the pain and suffering of Christ leading up to His crucifixion, and the suffering of humanity and the world under sin. It also symbolises royalty (recall the purple robe in which Jesus was mocked at the trial) and it looks towards the resurrection and the hope of newness celebrated at Easter.

Three traditional disciplines are practised and they are prayer, fasting and alms-giving (charity). Liturgically, the Church fasts by removing holy water from the fonts, and abstaining from singing the Gloria and using 'Alleluia' during Mass. We are called to repent, turn away from sin and renew ourselves. It is also a popular time for people to go to confession.
All this is done to prepare to celebrate the biggest feast in the liturgical calendar - Easter.

I love Stations of the Cross! We should invite our Protestant friends to attend one of them. I'm sure it will help them appreciate their bible knowledge more.

a) abstain from meat, but eat fish
b) abstain from meat and fish
c) fast

The 4th Sunday of Lent is Laetare Sunday. We're reminded that we're halfway through Lent. Priests may choose to use rose coloured vestments at Masses held today. The only other time this colour is used is Gaudete Sunday, the 3rd Sunday of Advent.
