hONG KONG (CNS) -- Two underground priests in eastern China's Wenzhou Diocese were detained by public security officers after celebrating a Mass to mark the end of the Year of the Eucharist.
On Oct. 27, police arrested the Wenzhou vicar general, Father Shao Zhumin, and Father Paul Jiang Sunian, chancellor, reported UCA News, an Asian church news agency based in Thailand.
The two priests and five other priests, all of the same underground church community, had celebrated a Mass for about 600 Catholics at Yongqiang parish.
After the Mass, Father Shao, some other priests, nuns and lay Catholics went to a restaurant for dinner. Public security officers seized Father Shao when he approached the counter to order food, while the other Catholics waited inside a room, the sources told UCA News Oct. 28.
Alerted to the arrest, the lay Catholics quietly escorted the other priests out of the restaurant through a kitchen door to prevent their arrests, the sources said.
Father Jiang, who did not join the group for dinner, headed back to his parish, according to the sources, who said public security officers took him into custody when he stopped at a toll booth. -

underground means the church NOT REGISTERED with the government....or they fail the registration which MEANS they could be CULTS, like the Aum cult or the taiwan fake buddhist types....
ofcuz in this case, it could be like the FA-LIAN GONG cult..but catholic priests in the case.

It's definitely not a cult. People have to practise their faith discretely in China and this sort of thing is not unheard of.

The Chinese government maintains that Chinese citizens' activities must not face interference or influence by external powers and demands that all Chinese "Catholics" must be loyal to the State. All worship must legally be conducted through State-approved churches, and though the CCP is a secular organisation it also reserves the right to appoint priests.
Beijing does not differentiate between temporal and spiritual loyalty. A Catholic can be loyal to his/her own government, while still listen to the Pope's teachings on religion. Indeed a true Catholic must have ties with the Vatican, or else they are not really Catholic. This puts Chinese Catholics in a dilemma - they must either sever ties with Rome or worship in underground churches. Those who maintain links with Rome are subject to persecution and legal prosecution. Priests especially are targetted to try to destroy the underground church. -

The ruling party there do have an organisation for Catholics but it refuses to recognise the Vatican's authority in Chinese church matters, both administrative and spiritual, and they don't recognise the Pope either. It's unacceptable, so the faithful won't be a part of it, and they have to practise their faith secretly. It's definitely not an issue about prudent spending. -

I politely asked them to remove my email address.
But they still sent. My ex company was a very political place to work.
To avoid getting myself into anything unnecessary, I had to shoot them a very rude email to stop them. -
