Have done some cursory reading on Voltaire.
He was brought up, i believe, in the Catholic Church at that time.
I can quite understand why he was so anti-establishment. He was against instituionalised religion. So am I.
The difference is that, he probably chose to be an atheist becasue of that. For me, I chose to find out the real God, who He really is, not the one portrayed by instituionalised churches, whether Catholic or Protestant. He chose to become bitter about the hypocrites in churches. I did not. But like him, I am not happy about hypocrisy.
"Atheism Voltaire considered not as baleful as fanaticism, but nearly always fatal to virtue." Yet he, I believe, chose to be an atheist. Probably so that he can indulge in his sins. I understand he had an affair with a married woman.
So to me, atheism is still not the solution. Only God can save us. Not atheism. -

On February twenty-eighth, when he believed his last hour had come, in the presence of his secretary he wrote down his Confession of Faith: "I die adoring God, loving my friends, not hating my enemies, and detesting superstition." This was dated and signed, and is preserved in the National Library at Paris. -
