Motoring review: Audi vs BMW vs SAAB vs Volvo

My friend bought an early model of the S60, many electrical problems, spend many days in the service center for troubleshooting. Also the car's suspension was delivered waaaay out of alignment resulting in early tire wear etc. Aircon compressor problems was another issue with some of the older Volvos, should be solved by now.Originally posted by level107:Hi t-r-s, what horror stories about the other swdes make? I can concur about the electrical problems!
My cousin's brand new S40 just spent 3 days at SM to trace an electrical fault that causes the interior lighting to remain on all the time. Still need to send it it for another day or so to replace the dodgy ceiling light switch.
Oh, and the boot only has 2 loops so no luggage net for him. Also, Volvo does not provide a breakdown warning triangle with the car. Need to use a tree branch and stick it in the petrol filler door!
Otherwise, a really nice car to drive. Handling is rally nice. Much better than any other Volvo (except XC90, not tried it). Better than my 93ss too, IMO!
I wish I my 93ss had the S40 suspension/handling setup. That will be sweet!!

Electrical problems on Volvo - Tell me about it . My current S40 had so many electrial problems that it was in the SM service centre more than it was on the road !!! - Not another Volvo or BMW for me - I heard there are so many problems in these two brands !

I managed to test drive the brand new 93ss/318i/S60 recently and am living with much regrets for not having enough money to book a new 93. I shall strive harder at lottery draws from now on.
The 93 really ROCKS!!! No car in its class can match its overall package. It is fast, lively, agile, eager (fantastic turbo), quiet (yes, quiet for a turbocharged car), sturdy, stable, best value for the money ($126k neg.).
318i can match in terms of agility and midrange power, and better in steering feel - very pointed, unlike the 93's a little too light.
Noticable slight body roll in the S60. Throttle lag also, thus not so eager to be pushed. Whereas, the 93 constantly give me the feeling to push it even harder. Accelaration is very direct and smooth for the 93. The 318i is not bad in accelaration too but still a fraction behind 93.
Manual Shift - the one in the 93 is, in one word - SUPERB!!!
Smooth and linear, coupled with the highly responsive throttle made the car very powerful and eager to charge ahead. I managed to squeezed past a heavy truck at a bend of merger lanes with ease and confidence.
Back to the S60. Great interior space and fittings. Very nice classy exterior( subjective factor) , best boot space too. Drive is the least fun of the trio but is considered good for point-to-point driving. Very robust and stable. Audio system is good also. Maybe it is due to the fact that w/o it, can hear the turbo at work.
Much being said, can only dream on a new 93 or settle with budget constraint for a 3 yr old S60.
