SHOPPERS at a busy mall in Bukit Batok Central fled in terror yesterday when a young man strode into a sports shop, whipped out a knife and stabbed a shop assistant repeatedly in the chest.
While the shop's customers ran out, the attacker walked casually away. He paced outside the shop for a while, muttering angrily all the time, then went back into the shop. This time, he slashed the throat of the assistant, who by then was on his knees between stacks of shoe boxes.
Three security guards and an off-duty Volunteer Special Constabulary officer, who heard the screams of shoppers, rushed to the scene.
They pulled the metal shutters of the shop down to stop the suspect from fleeing. They asked the youth to drop the knife and subdued him until the police arrived.
The tall and slim 18-year-old suspect did not struggle and was led off, hands cuffed behind his back, by Criminal Investigation Department officers. Mr Kelvin Yang, 17, was pronounced dead on the spot by paramedics.
Police spokesman Stanley Norbert said police recovered a kitchen knife with a 16cm-long blade in the shop, SportsLink. It is believed that Mr Yang knew his attacker, although it is not clear yet what the motive for the attack was.
Three other staff members in the shop at the time were not hurt.
An hour after the incident, which attracted flocks of curious onlookers, Mr Yang's distraught girlfriend arrived to identify her boyfriend's body.
A shop assistant at a nearby apparel shop said the suspect had been loitering around the area on Friday. Ms Sammi Xiang said he came into her shop a few times. But he seemed distracted and appeared to be looking out for someone.
Almost six hours after the incident yesterday, police removed the cordon and hordes of curious bystanders rushed to peer into the glass windows of SportsLink, where staff were busy scrubbing away the bloodstains.
An assistant at neighbouring shop Aussino said she locked the glass doors to her shop when two SportsLink customers ran in.
'I was afraid he was a madman and would come into our shop to attack us as well,' she said.
When The Sunday Times visited Mr Yang's HDB flat in Serangoon Avenue 4, his mother was sobbing and declined to be interviewed. A relative said he was an outgoing and active person and was to enlist for national service in a few months' time. His elder brother is a regular in the army.
