SINGAPORE, March 6 - Singapore Airlines <SIAL.SI> said on Friday it is avoiding North Korean airspace and using alternative routes, but the move would not significantly affect the travel plans or flight times of its passengers.
North Korea, which is preparing to test its longest-range missile, said on Thursday it could not guarantee the safety of South Korea's commercial flights off the east coast of the peninsula where the missile base is located.

I am not aware commercial flights were even allowed in north korean airspace
Hasn't SQ always been doing that? I remember my past few flights to Incheon(Seoul) Airport on SQ flight path has always been up thru Phillipines, ROC, Okinawa, over Jeju and then on Korean penisula from South-east thru Wonju to Incheon. I can't think of any route that SQ flies that utilises DPRK's airspace(apart from the A345 for LAX and EWR which even then avoids DPRK airspace to begin with).
Imagine the repeat of KAL007, DPRK would be so busted.

Trust me if DPRK shoots down a plane there will be all-out war on the Korean pennisula...
if an SIA flight gets shot down, I'll say free target practice for our pilots.

SIA Airbus A380-800(considered new), A340-500(also considered new) and A330-300(factory fresh new). Our Boeing all are old, shitty and useless(save for the B777-300ER)...
Aiyah DPRK dun shoot down SIA plane lah, go shoot down China Airlines one better luh(the Taiwanese one)...
Be prepared for a repeat of the tensions after the KAL-007 incident 26 years ago, should something like that happen again.
Hi everyone, nice to meet you all...
i'm currently studying aerospace in sg.. As the point of my view, every airline will have to get the permission to get in the airspace of that country, or somehow SIA didn't have the permission to get in the airspace so they have to use alternate route? another reason is, sercurity reason.. i'm sure you guys know why SIA didn't pass through their airspace because of sercurity... comments on me will be welcome..
If you have been to Seoul, you will know that when taking off/landing, the flight path does approach close to DPRK's airspace.
It's not about being in DPRk's airspace. Now it's about being near it that's dangerous.
I believe it's sabre-rattling lar. If it really does shoot down an airliner, all hell will break loose.
I know that. I fly to Seoul Incheon Airport 4 ~ 6 times a year. Planes will mostly land from direction of the sea and take off in the direction of the DMZ. Will have hard right or left turn as Incheon is only a few nautical miles south of the buffer DMZ.
