BANGKOK, Thailand - A passenger plane heading to one of Thailand's leading tourist destinations crashed Sunday as it tried to land in heavy rain and was engulfed in flames. A regional official said as many as 100 people were feared dead.
Worapot Ratthaseema, deputy governor of Thailand's Phuket island, said that as many as 100 were dead, based on assessments that as few as 20 passengers made it of the wreck alive.
"I believe 90 percent or about 100 passengers are fear dead," Worapot said, adding that Phuket airport in southern Thailand had been temporarily closed following the crash of the One-Two-GO jet. -
Yeap, just saw it in the news. 39 dead for now.

The sub-variants in the MD-80 Family are -81, -82, -83, -87 and -88. The MD-80 Family is superseded by the MD-90 Family. The MD-95 is now known as Boeing 717.
The MD-80s, MD-90s and B-717 are basically a modernized stretch of the DC-9s. -

Cos got 4 models ( 81 82 83 88 ) can carry the same no. of passengers and i mistyped in consecutive numbers
and another is 87 which is smaller size -

It just happens that the aircraft that crashed belongs to a budget carrier. Remember SQ 006? It crashed during a typhoon, and belonged to one of the most reputable carriers in the world. But to say then that SIA isn't safe is unfair. Same goes to the budget carriers around the world. Budget carriers are relatively safe. But there are certain carriers that you may need to keep out. -
