Song of Woe
Along a vein bent by time and age,
A long time I suffered a nagging ache
As I struggled under the watery weight,
I stretched hard and heard it break.
A violent shudder went up my spine
And all the way down that aching vein
As I trembled from time and time
My body swelled and surged in pain.
Across the whole that ripple went,
A quiet undercurrent, hidden within.
Gathering force that is deadly to vent
As it coasts, my agony begins.
With mighty swipes and crashing blows,
With a deadly rhythm the current pounds.
Reaching for the highest point it goes,
Amidst the desperate cries and frightful sounds.
The rage is spent and the tide subsides,
As my body is whole again
For the devastation brought to innocent lives

The cat made a sound and pitiful was its plea

The Game
Numbers and algebra, facts and figures,
aligned in formulas that defines fascination.
Link one to one and two plus two,
LifeÂ’s theories become just an equation.
Snooker and drinks, dateless and lonely,
At the bar a game I formed in my head.
Slowly and surely, with wit and cunning
I goaded the guys to date her friends instead.
Diligent and dedicated, loyal and true,
I devoted myself to the work that I do.
Caution and suspicion soon taught me to see,
a conspiracy in the game around me and you.
Words and phrases, letters and newspapers,
Piece by piece the connections begin.
Day by day as the game progresses
a dreaded fear grows stronger within.
Friends and family, lover and kin,
all but one IÂ’ve left aside.
Codes and secrets, thoughts and doubts,
alone in Charles my friend I confide.
Fast and bright, flashing and fleeting,
Shadows in the dark in every place I go.
Dangerous and daring, by night and in stealth,
I delivered to a lone house dossiers of the foe.
Restless and stressed, worried and worn,
Alicia sought to make the game desist.
Sudden and shocking, without a warning,
Point blank I fainted, unable to resist.
Images and visions, dreams and apparitions,
These were the reality of what IÂ’ve seen
Marcee and Charles, ageless and undying,
Diseased delusions of the game they have been.
Trembling and weak, resolute and determined,
I fought to regain my life and stand.
Eventually and successfully, the game is won,
And a Nobel Prize rewarded me at the end. -

Waiting
Her eyes brightened with a smile,
as she paused in her tasks for a while.
“He’ll be back soon,
Coming home at last,
The long wait has been worthwhile.”
She checked on the steamed chicken,
And made sure the beef stew thickened.
A stir-fried dish stands ready,
Of mushrooms and seasonal greens.
As she looked to the time, her heart quickened.
On the table, the plates were placed.
In and out of the kitchen she paced.
The meal was set,
An epicureanÂ’s delight.
Each moment she waited, her pulse raced.
Minute by minute the clock struck ten.
ThereÂ’s still no sign of him round the bend.
She looked at the dinner,
Now gone cold.
Second by second anxiety rends.
She looked out of the window for a sign,
For her sonÂ’s return, she pined.
The door bell rang.
From her seat she sprang.
“Finally! Everything will turn out fine.”
She opened the door to see men in blue,
Of their purpose she had no clue.
“A truck hit,
And he died on the way”
She fell as she wished it was not true.
Her eyes dulled with her grief,
as she mourned and lost her sole will to live.
“I’ll be coming to you,
Old as I am, weÂ’ll reunite at last,
Without you, this life will be brief.” -

This is a little sad tale,
a movie in monochrome
A mother awaits her son's return,
the son will not make it home.
The mother's anguish was plainly clear.

One for the day when we first met,
Two for days we spend as friends.
Three for days of fun and laughter,
Four for days of chatting till the dayÂ’s end.
Five for weeks of meeting for movies,
Ten for weeks of outings and dining.
Fifteen for weeks of deeper understanding,
Twenty for weeks of knowing each otherÂ’s mind.
Ten for months of wondering if thereÂ’s more
Twenty for months of being unsure
Thirty for months of honeymoon coupledom
Forty for months of just being together
Twenty for the hours we spent apart,
Forty for the hours doubt left its mark.
Sixty for the hours tears fell on their own,
Eighty for the hours of knowing itÂ’s not meant to be.
And five for the loving memory of the one we love most,
365 paper cranes in a bottle. -

Softly he whispers in my ear,
Gentle yet wistful, delicately clear,
Lightly it danced on the mild spring breeze,
Lifting the spirits with apparent ease.
Tenderly he sings to my heart,
Kind and loving, deeply passionate,
Subtly it grew, like a rose it blossomed
Glowing like ambers in the bosom.
Ardently he croons to my being,
Intense and devoted, zealously wooing,
Fervently it burned with white heat on its flames
Ablaze, it sets the soul on fire.
Madly he tears through my mind,
Quick and violent, vehemently blind,
Suddenly it rents with the keenness of steel
Slicing the heart like tender veal
Coldly he left my empty shell,
Aloof and distant, eerily hell,
Silently it faded with the body grown weary
Leaving naught but a scar in memory. -
Disclaimer: I hope this piece doesn't offend anyone, particularly the family of the victim. It's just an expression of my personal opinion that this could have been avoided if the more were done earlier. What's important and what's not....?
