too bad loh.. sometimes these decisions are made without proper studies or with logical mind
sg market is pretty small... sg near JB... sg got cable/net access. Perhaps in the near future, there will be other things that will occupy the spare time cinema use to fill up... its not impossible...
perhaps cinemas will loose the deep penetration into the market they used to have.
But it all depends on where they want to position cinemas and how well they understand their product and customers and delivery... its all their strategy, and perhaps their strategy is ot to serve the general market but like espanade, serve only certain segment people only and that they feel is enough to make money.
its not a good or bad decision. its just a decision that will impact their strategy. I cannot influence them on their societal decisions..
But I choose not to go cinemas if I can help it loh... Perhaps this is what some of my peers would do... But as I believe, sg folks mostly complain and do nothing... thereby, giving the impression that we are sheep who are easy to fleece.
See last time 1 month go once. They earn maybe 12 X $4 = $48 ($4 - is for expenses)
Now 1 year go twice. So They year perhaps 2 x $5 = $10 (increase $1). -
I would increase the price too if I were him. Look at the facts:
- The stringent implementation of IP rights is scaring people off any involvement in pirated stuff. People are starting to be conditioned and moreover, Singaporeans are so easy to condition.
- With every so call blockbuster, whether the movie is actually good or sucks, a lot of marketing has gotton into making noise for these movies, rendering them a "must watch" among the young and hip. Plays well in exploiting Sporean kiasu mentality.
- With the recent go-ahead of remaking Spore's recreation and entertainment scene, it is a logical step to ride the tide.
- The cinema experience today is not all about the movie already. With cineplexes moving to offer an overall "entertaining' experience, they have already given up on the low-end market. Business is business. -

That why so many people still support piracy. When price rise on certain thing like bus fare. Other will follow. What will increase next? Next year will they increase and what excuse will they give? And government will certainly grant their wish. Sometime, really suspect corruption/bribery. Pay so much but service not very good and more problem like break down of LRT, etc.
