talking abt LOTR suddenly reminded me of something....
how come there is no thread around about books?
Does anyone out there still read as a hobby? what do you read??
I admit I'm a die-hard fantasy bookworm... Tolkien (but of course...)Feist, Eddings, Hobb, Farland, Brooks etc etc....
any others out there?? -
i read the whole of the Dune series so many times...
also books by William Gibson.. in Neuromancer and short stories like Johnny Mnemonic...
other books i read are diverse... from Irvine Welsh (Trainspotting) to Banana Yoshimoto who writes quirky stories you can't seem to put down...
and for humour, there's always PJ O'Rourke..
and more... my room's a mess of books

Yup, I read the lot of LOTR and Harry Potter, not forgetting some Tom Clancy books....
But I have an ambition....
To set up (if I can) a library in a spare room, full of my fav books..... -

all about Andrew Wile's battle with the most difficult math puzzle of all time.. one that has frustrated mathematicians as great as Euler for 350 years..

fave author: Banana Yoshimoto
she writes in Japanese and i write the translated versions of her books.. she turns the most mundane of things, spices it with quirky and strange things, and creates stories that are totally readable and even with the inherent strangeness, connects with something inside you which you can identify with -
my favourite series was the one Raymond E Feist worked on with Janny Wurts...
Daughter of the Empire, Servant of the Empire and Mistress of the Empire...
Loved the play of politics and plot development of that series.... hehehe....
Another favourite series I've read was Robin Hobb's The Liveship Traders series.....

been reading the rantings of one Neil Humphreys about his deranged views of singapore... a second book about it.. his first, i've lost (probably somewhere in the house of my ex) was 'Notes From An Even Smaller Island'.. now 'Scribbles from the Same Island' also goes into the heart of the heartlands of singapore

That last new book i read was "The Count of Monte Cristo"
also have a large starwars books collection, and tom clancy as well. read a lot of sci-fi books. wanna start on BattleTech as well. Besides that, i have a lot of non-fic books. whole home is choke-full of bookshelves. mom n dad instilled in me the love for books so early on that they regretted it later when i would simply chuck my homework aside in favour of a good read. -
