Taufik and Lin Dan expected to meet in semi-final clash
Taufik Hidayat remains the only non-chinese shuttlers in men's singles event in Djarum Indonesia Open, after Chen Hong, Lin Dan and Bao Chunlai punished the other 2 Malaysians and Sony Dwi Kuncoro respectively. The indonesian is now set to meet "Super Dan" for a semi-final clash which should be one of the most appealing matches of this year and possibly an early Christmas present for a full house of spectators on Saturday.
One is OLympic Champion, and almost unbeatable in his home ground. One is World No. 1, and has been literally reigning over the badminton world for the past one year. Yet with a clear scar that he will be eager to smoothen in the Tennis Senayan INdoor Stadium on Saturday; a scar made by an early exit at the Olympic games, while his opponent of the day is the one who brought home the olive leaf crown.
One is Taufik Hidayat, the other is Lin Dan. Maybe the most two talented players of this decade. And they proved it once more on Friday, in front of a packed and noisy stadium filled with every generation of spectators, from grandparents to almost newborns. All shouting and cheering for their favourites to a point where the poor line judge in charge of the score board couldn't even hear what the umpire is announcing.
Is Taufik back to his best? His coach and mentor Mulyo Handoyo seems to think so, "Taufik is playing with lots of confidence now. I believe he has about the same level as Athens, but it will b a 50/50 percent match against Lin Dan tomorrow." One man has already put his bet on Taufik, Wong Choong Hann, in spite of his defeat to an impressive LIn Dan of China. The Chinese left no open space, no time to breathe for the Malaysian. "He is definately on top of his game now. He has matured alot since few months and he knows how to put more pressure on his games which makes him even tougher. But I believe Taufik could be a player to beat him, here or anywhere else," mentioned Wong Choong Hann, who said he has nothing to regret because he has done all he could.
"Lin Dan was just playing much better, much quicker than me tonight, but I still believe Taufik has a good chance, especially in front of his home crowd," added the Malaysian after his 10-15, 7-15 defeat. It will be a fierce fight, with Lin Dan looking very strong, and Taufik counting on his public support and also on the fact that 9 Indonesians scooped the men's singles' title out of the last 10 times in this competition. If 'babyface' Taufik wants to make three in a row for a fifth title altogether in the Indonesia Open, he will have to pass the Lin Dan hurdle for sure - a high hurdle as Lin Dan seems to cope with pressure much better than before.
