Frankly i don't know how you define them as good or lousy....
Anyone care to enlighten me on this??

and how does he bring the tiny things in? through the practise sessions with the orchestra or on the spot during the concert? if he does it during the practise sessions... waste time standing there during the actual performance right?
actually i still dunno how the conductor contributes to the music... maybe just slows a certain part down, some part tell them play louder...? -
i haf the same queries.
i guess we both r jus not musically inclined.

sometimes wonder why are they standing there...
cos to me, i think the musicians shld know when and where to go in one mah...
if someone makes a mistake during playing.. is the conductor at fault or the musician at fault?? -

he fixes the tempo so eberyone can follow him.....cos ppl count "1,2,3" at different speed mah.....so he is the one tt centralizes the beat.......
and oso to guide the music......loud, soft.....solo......sectional......
most often the audience oni see his butt and his flinging arms....... -

Conductor is a matter that allows the transmittion of heat through it easily.
E.g. of a good conductor is iron. Eg. of a bad conductor is wood.

yah... and y do some of them look so dramatic? hair and arms flinging ard... y? control tempo nia mah.. i feel that a good one makes them start n end on time n target...

good conductors are those tt are immersed in the music themselves and able to coordinate all the players to produce the best effect.....
these are usually quite kua zhang.....head oso shake....whole body shake......
they oso try to make eye contact with the players......
some condutors are quite robotic.....oni couting 1,2,3 and flicking the "wand".....not bery lively......when the players follow his mood, they oso play bery "dull" music......... -

practice sessions are usually sectional......meaning the wind sections practise on their own, the strings practise on their own
then they will come together and rehearse as a whole, sometimes with the conductor, sometimes not, sometimes jus any tom dick harry who can count 1,2,3,4 to do the coordination......
got some conductor is invite from overseas one....the most oni 1 or 2 practices then is the concert nite liao....... -

A conductor works with the orchestra. What I'm trying to say is, how a piece of music will turn out actually largely depends on the conductor.
This is because of the influence of the conductor's interpretation of the piece of music. And to a large extent, the conductor's performance on the podium affects how immersed the players are in the piece of music, and in turn how well they will be able to bring out the essence of a piece of music.
Conductors aren't there just to keep tempo. Their work is not just what you see on the stage during a performance, but rather also the preparation work done before the performance.
In a piece of music, there are instances where there are certain tempo changes that an orchestra may not be able to handle without a conductor, such as umm accelerandos and ritards...
Aiyah. How to say in a structured manner.
We don't LOOK at the conductor, but at our scores, yes. I don't know for others, but for me what I did was look at my scores and then somehow I manage to keep the conductor in my view also. Like, multitasking.
Another job of the conductor is to give cues for entrances of various instruments, percussion quite common...

A point to note though... orchestras WITHOUT conductors do exist, an example of which is the New Century Chamber Orchestra. It was in the news some time back... I think they came to Singapore for a concert too. -
