ThanksOriginally posted by MooKu:ahhhh.
A while back there was this guy from the Lee Wei Song School of Music [or so he claimed] who came in here, opened a forum on singing. It's HERE
Just thought you might wanna take a look.
Otherwise, if you want to learn singing, you can really go to his school and check it out. They're not bad.. or you can try out the auditions for Ocean Butterflies' singing course next year. Otherwise I'm not sure about music schools, but I'll ask around for you

Can you do a Nessun Dorma? I see if I can hear from where I am.
Got pple complain or not? Just kiddingDo you karaoke alot?
Lu Fang?Originally posted by joeljuls:no complain so far....so good. I don't karaoke alot but when I do I like to sing William So and Lu Fang songs. I like Disney's songs best, phantom of the opera, Joseph and the technicolour dreamcoat and Les Miserable (spell correctly I hope..) I'm totally fascinated with broadway type of singing. It sounds great when you know how to project.
Wat's Nessun Dorma?can eat or not? Its a term I've not heard before or isit a song?
I used to sing in church in the past but with the songs they sing nowadays....no point participating...
Young enough to have 2 kids lah! Just like old songs since sec school days. They have more meaning and can hear what they are singing rather than having music blasting in and out of my head.Originally posted by MooKu:Lu Fang?Erm you how old ah
Oh.. so you're hoping to take lessons so you can develop more in the operatic-singing style ah.. icic.. Nessun Dorma is the song from Turandot, made famous by Luciano Pavarotti..You can go to those mp3 channels in IRC and search.. I found mine there
Hee I prefer those traditional hymns too
Ohh heehee okay. Hello Uncle!Originally posted by joeljuls:Young enough to have 2 kids lah! Just like old songs since sec school days. They have more meaning and can hear what they are singing rather than having music blasting in and out of my head.
yes you are right that i want to develop more operatic style because broadway style is a little on the edge of danger of voice damage. The lady that did little house of horror will kill her voice in about 2 years time. Some mature singers from Broadway have very good voice habits but the younger ones seem run into the dangerous category. Many of them just look good.
Anyone here like Josh Gorban? I love his voice. A great legend in making.

Voice damage through Broadway-style singing?!Geez I've never heard of that before! Sounds... scary. /me grabs her own throat *ack* What's Little House of Horror? A musical ah.. hmm wonder if I can find the song..
I used to loooove Josh Groban songs initially.. And I thought he had a powerful voice that was very rich.. But then now.. I don't know, I still think it's good, but the excitement has since died down alot.
Hey you know what? The fella who posted in the forum "Singing Music in Singapore" here in SgForums mentioned it's only a myth that singing must use diaphragm... so which is the right one..Originally posted by joeljuls:![]()
I'm not that old....
Most of the singers I know used their throat instead of their diaphram to sing. Someone recently gave me a free 20 min lesson and pointed out to me that I'm using alot of my throat. That 20 mins taught me plenty. She mentioned every part of your face and chest should be used for voice projection. Her instruction helped me to sound louder without have me to raise my vioce to sound louder. I paisei to continue because it was free. She's 60 yrs old but still sing like a nightingale.
Another teacher whom I train under taught me to free up my voice for higher notes. She was the one who informed me of possible damage to voice if I strain it further. Damage vocal chorfd are called nodules. Many ppl who sings karaoke encountered this problem in Japan and must go thru operation. After that of course cannot sing already. Teachers in singapore often face the same problem.
Little house of horror was a movie musical made into a broadway musical or the other way around....I can't really remember. Good funny lyrics but the main female lead sang in a funny way which I cannot comprehend....very straineous to the vocal chords.
My teachers are trained in Venice and US. Don't know where he's train? There are different school of thoughts. I hope the best for him in his technique.Originally posted by MooKu:Hey you know what? Wah...gao ren....do you teach vocals? Can learn from u or not?Originally posted by gasband:it is tru that singing should not and need not be concentrated on the diaphram all the time. Using your throat, using ur nasal, projecting ur voice thru ur nose, thru ur forehead can produce different kind of voicing which may be suitable at certain parts of a song. If you sing a 5 minute song using ur diaphram all thru out, you will just tire urself out...well you can if you are damn trained in ur diaphram strength but that to me is unnecessary waste of strength esp when in a showmanship-heavy performances for a band.
HellooooOriginally posted by whoelse:Hi hi,
quite of honored that during my little stay in sgforums, I'm still remembered (or penalised!)
Anyway, I like to sing broadway too, only I'm not allow to teach them in my school, unless of course my student wants.
I hope my post on Diaphragm doesn't get distort out of the point, because what I meant was it shouldn't be the view as the main point of singing. In fact, in proper vocal studies, diaphragm training is meant to tackle the more important/difficult part, which is getting the proper resonance, i.e. vocal registers.
To sum it up,
good diaphragm usage ---> good breathing ---> better use of different vocal registers.
Do you hold personal classes?Originally posted by whoelse:Yah, thanks, this is a great forum really.
Anyway, to sign off, I'll give my view on the singing subject.
It comes in 2 aspects:
1) Techincal - This is diaphragm usage, breath control, tone/vocal register productions, breath pressure...etc. Things which even a voice specialist in the hospital can help you with. This techincal study ensure that you are using the right voice mechanism and not hurting the vocal cords in the process. This study is almost standard; the training methods are almost empirical in the intital stages.
2) Artisitic - This is when alot of people mix it up with techincal. Only when you can get the right and easy voice, then you can start modelling it into the way you want it to be. It can be round and big classical voice, tough rough rocker voice, or it can be a mutable pop voice. Different instructors will also have their favourite 'vocal effects', hence you'll be able to pick up different styles from different instructors. This is also the part when alot of differences arise. The debate whether you should use head or chest voice, inhale silently or with sound...... It's a matter of preference.
Well, I really wish to, but it's really out of my work ethics. You know....you cannot really work for a vocal school and start taking private vocal students yourself, regardless where you get to know them. It's direct conflict of interest; no big deal, but at least for the moment, I can't bring myself to do it.Originally posted by joeljuls:Do you hold personal classes?
