Introducing the complete Jazz SyllabusThe above was from the ABRSM website.
Jazz is at last becoming more widely recognised as one of the most important musical genres of the twentieth century.
Great care has therefore been taken in developing this syllabus to make it suitable for all students of jazz, both those already playing or studying jazz, who have never before had access to performance assessment of this kind, and those who have gained their existing experience and knowledge from the study of classical music.
Currently, jazz exams are available in the UK, Ireland, New Zealand and Australia. The first jazz exams in Singapore and Malaysia (Kuala Lumpur and Penang) will be held in late 2003.
I'm not planning to enter a music institution with a cert in jazz piano. If I were to learn jazz piano, it would be more for interest and recreation.Originally posted by Ytsejam:With regards to entry into arts institution or perhaps music schools, if you are gonna pursue a performance degree, entry requirements into schools like Berklee and Manhatten require a grade 5 in ABRSM theory and you would have to include a tape/CD of your playing. Most institutions level the field with music theory. Taking Jazz piano lessons is just gonna be an advantage if you are gonna be doing a performace major.
i cant agree more. somehow i feel learning any instrument, not only piano, it'll be good to get the basics from courses n classes etc but if u wanna get good, you gotta do it urself.Originally posted by MooKu:I'm not planning to enter a music institution with a cert in jazz piano. learning under someone cramps ur style. its no longer an art form. especially for jazz, there's only so much u need to learn - what usually works and what doesnt... then with those scales and the basic rules, u impro from there. thats what makes jazz so great
of course it's good to learn SOMEthings. but these things should be a guide and not a must-do list. without the grounding in basics, u will hit a point where u dont find urself improving anymore. then u need some wise guidance to start it off again.Originally posted by MooKu:*nods*
if we learn entirely from a teacher, most probably we'll be developing a style that's the teacher's and not our own... musicians should be encouraged to try different styles of playing and discover their own
did you return to the bar to look for him? Maybe he left his contacts thereOriginally posted by juvejazzman:of course it's good to learn SOMEthings. but these things should be a guide and not a must-do list. without the grounding in basics, u will hit a point where u dont find urself improving anymore. then u need some wise guidance to start it off again.
u heard of a drummer called jimmy lee? played at voodoo shack and od's backstage bar last time... he was my teacher for awhile but i've kinda lost contact with him when i lost my hp... sian

wow touring.. nice!Originally posted by juvejazzman:actually no... heheh and that is a very good idea.
but he's damn busy la... tours wif some HK/Taiwanese artistes... keeps stressin to me that touring is the ONLY way to make $$ in the music business
whoa... cryptic... nah, for $50 per session, not inclusive of transport costs and time wasted... it's hardly rewarding. somemore he tells me he kena a lot of rich man son who cant play for crock but still engage him to teach. frustrating... thats why most of these performin guys dont teach. i was lucky to get him, coz at least i have prior experience, not so enfuriating to teachOriginally posted by MooKu:wow touring.. nice!
aiyohhhhh u tell him to continue teaching lar. teaching also brings in money and teaching is a very... umm.. meaningful and umm sacred? career
