  i only started this year in april, can play many songs, dynamics sh!tz, watever. heh.. but dunno plucking, strumming still kinda styleless. not so chio. so me not expert.

  how do u define expert?
  
  if u have the chords in front of me i can play all the majors minors sevenths minor sevenths... some augs some dims..
  
  but if u put NOTHING in front of me and ask me to strum or pluck then i hope u enjoy the sound of silence... maybe with a fart here and there for good measure.
  
  i think most pple define a "good" guitarist as one that can play by ear. as in all gather in a group to sing song.. then someone think of a song like say "guang huai fang shi" and he/she can play/pluck/strum/improvise on the spot.
  
  and if that person can put down his guitar, and go over to the piano and do the same thing... i'll kowtow to him/her. as long as he KNOWS the song, he can play.. that's damn ZHAI!!!
  
  and.. i have a friend like that. really talaneted.. quite good looking, musically talented, great results, double degree, working for a chartered acctg firm, damn jude gf, drives BMW, and really down to earth and a good friend (but seldom meet becos he's busy)

  Erm OT here but... what's the difference between folk and classical guitar, in terms of the guitar itself, music, and styles of playing?

  well... ppl have this misconception that a classical guitar is the 'lousier' guitar and its suitable for beginners...
  
  well it IS cheaper... but a good classical guitar can cost up to 5-6K and it offers the sweetest sound and its easier to depress the strings, somehow it feels softer.
  
  u have classical, flamenco, yadayadayada... those u use the classical/spanish guitar. Classical music u have to pluck the strings, u can't use a spectrum/pick. Its a little more rigid than the other ways of playing, because no matter how much feelings u put into the piece, you're still playing the piece... but a good classical guitarists knows how to control the tempo, the tone and the volume of the notes...
  
  generally when playing the guitar... there's a whole bunch of styles... i can't remember all of them, especially the electric guitar side... there are different methods and techniques to do scaling. Eric clapton has his own style, Yngwie Malsteen has his own style, so does, Slash, Van Halen and many others... the top guitarists are the best at a particular style / technique
  
  for folk/acoustic guitar... well u just listen to MTV unplugged. that's about it.

  Are those Yamaha classes enough or are the music schools (those singing, talent breeding grounds) better?

  actually... it can be self taught... its based on ur interest...
  u can go to yamaha and quit after u get bored...
  or u can teach urself and go a long way.
  
  but for things like this, its better to get a personal tutor.
  
  for beginners, in order not to hurt ur fingers, i suggest u borrow a classical guitar, to practise and see if u'll still be interested.
  
  after that, u can decide which style u wanna go into... then u purchase the appropriate guitar.

  If you are interest to play pop songs with singing, I recommend you Hark Music. through out the course there are monthly stage performance to develop your confidence and skills. u can check out their website @ www.harkmusic.com

  I 'm focusing on learning how to play first rather than honing stage confidence etc. The acoustic guitar course looks interesting & convincing though. Thanks for the rec, I'll check out their rates.
