Singapore to install hundreds more surveillance cameras

Singapore will install hundreds more surveillance cameras on its streets, including around a central district where the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF) meetings will be held in September, a report has said.
The closed circuit TV (CCTV) cameras will be linked to a new system at the police headquarters which the Straits Times said "could eventually be smart enough to spot unlawful and suspicious acts, from theft to a person planting a hidden explosive."
Cameras will be installed to monitor traffic junctions and on lamp posts and poles around the city -- where the World Bank and the IMF will hold their annual meetings in September.
About 16,000 delegates from more than 180 countries, including heads of governments, finance chiefs, central bankers and chief executives of leading corporations, are expected to attend the meetings and related events.
The cameras should enable authorities not only to monitor traffic but also to review street scenes to track down suspects in the event of a terrorist strike, the report said.
Current CCTV surveillance of other areas have been credited for a reduction in crime rates.
Last year, the transport minister said the government was "actively looking" into installing CCTV cameras on buses as part of stepped up security measures in the city-state, a staunch US ally which fears it is on the list of targets of regional and international terrorist groups.
It has increased security at border entry points, the subway system, sensitive installations and public places frequented by foreigners.
Among other measures are restrictions on the sale of pre-paid mobile phone cards in a bid to curb their use by terrorist and criminal groups, including detonating bombs by remote control.
Authorities have also restricted the entry of trucks carrying petrol and other flammable materials into the central business district amid fears terror groups could use these vehicles as weapons.

the israelis knew better and put people on the ground instead... thing is, it's cheaper, effective and THERE...

hire a bunch of minimum-wage rent-a-cop to look at 20 monitors for an 8-hour shift??
spend $30 million dollars on the hardware but $5 an hour for the rent-a-cop...

btw, in front of El-Al counter in the US? a nutcase pulled out a gun and stared shooting.. he was taken down and out in 2.3 seconds by Israeli agents the airport security didn't even know were there.. their CCTVs and rent-a-cops didn't even know what happened an hour after it happened..

This is scary, my floor level is actually the rooftop level of another building
what i dont understand is, why is there a cctv on that rooftop
and it not only points towards a spot which i would not name, it also somehow looks like it can look directly into my kitchen

you have 10000 CCTVs pointed at the place, you are still NOT going to stop anyone from planting a bomb or shooting people.. you need people there, ready for action... people walking around, mingling to look at the suspicious characters...
you CANNOT do that on a CCTV... simple as that..

Everywhere their flight goes. They have armed personnel with them. And the airport must agree to their SOP. If not they will not fly there.
CCTVs are just there as a deterrent to hum ji criminals. Afterall, putting cops at every corner of the streets everyday 24/7 is an equally useless idea.
Its just there as a buffer la. Afterall. the whole location where the IMF will be held will be like a high security zone. We all see how well protected raffles city was.
nevertheless, there will be loopholes. But hey, itimidation is better than nothing. -
