COE prices go up again
THE prices of certificates of entitlement (COE) have rebounded, rising by about $3,000 in the two most popular car categories.
At the close of yesterday's bidding exercise, they had risen from a nine-month low two weeks ago to levels last seen in July and August.
Bidders will pay $31,334 for cars 1,600 cc and below, up from $28,409 previously.
COEs for cars above 1,600 cc will cost $31,795, up from $28,009.
Open category certificates, which have been used traditionally to register large cars, now cost $30,989, from $29,499.
Those for commercial vehicles are $17,581, up from $16,409.
Demand for cars has risen too, with 1.7 times more bids than COEs available. Previously, it was 1.2 to 1.3 more.
From a percentage point of view, the largest rise was seen in motorcycle COE prices, which went up about 70 per cent, from an eight-year-low of $21 to $36.
Mr Phoon Ah Sow, president of the Singapore Motor Cycle Trade Association, blamed the languishing demand for motorbikes on ballooning insurance premiums and a still gloomy economic climate.
He expected the COE price for these vehicles to remain low as long as these conditions prevail.
Motor Traders' Association president Michael Wong noted that car COE prices appear to be 'going back to their normal level'.
He said demand for cars may be picking up now because consumers want to avoid the increase in goods and services tax next January.
Car dealers are also pushing to reach sales targets before the year end, he added.
