Man on daily walk dies in accident
AN 87-YEAR-OLD man out on his early morning walk was knocked down by a car on Monday and died in hospital less than eight hours later.
Lim Heng Joon, a stickler for exercise, left his eighth-floor flat in Block 359A Admiralty Drive at about 5.30 am.
The retired cook, who had five children and several grandchildren, was headed for the Aik Hua Food Centre at Block 406A in Sembawang Drive, a distance he would walk in 20 minutes.
He would usually return home by 7 am, in time to see his daughter-in-law send his grandson to school.
With an umbrella that doubled as a walking stick, and wearing shorts and T-shirt, he had barely walked a kilometre from his flat and was crossing the road in front of Block 359 when he was hit.
He suffered injuries to his head, waist and hip but remained conscious long enough to tell medical staff his home phone number.
He died at about 1 pm, shortly after his family arrived at the Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
'My father was a very fit man who always moved about, chatted with friends and would fret if he remained at home for too long,' said his son, Mr Lim Jin Nee, 49, a machine operator.
'At that hour, traffic is usually very light. I do not know why this had to happen,' he said.
The 48-year-old driver of the car is helping police with their investigations, said a police spokesman.
The road surface was dry and visibility was good at the time, he added.
Police have appealed to witnesses to call 1800-547-1818. -
