I think is mainly the thickness of the oil lor. A thicker oil can protect ur engine or gear better, but as it is heavier, more power is lost. That is y ppl use very liquid oil for racing, but this type of oil dont last at all lor. Not so suitable for normal user. Unless u very rich and free.

2-stroke uses:
2T--> to lubricate the engine
Gear oil --> for the gear la (but some ppl call it as engine oil... which cause confusion)
4-stroke uses:
4T-->for the engine oil (to lubricate the engine)
Gear oil--> for the gear
4T is actually for 4-stroke bike to use as engine oil, but some ppl use it as gear oil also. Coz it is more liquid, lighter compare to normal gear oil.
